The Alzheimer’s Association Is Hosting The Longest Day A Chance To Show Love And Support For Those Fighting Alziehmers And Their Caretakers

Alzheimer’s Association plans for “The Longest Day”

Alzheimers is a category of dementia that can cause implications with behavior, thinking, and memory. The symptoms of this disease can surface slowly and typically progress faster in later stages. There is currently no cure, only treatment. The symptoms can lead to drastic changes in behavior and make it difficult to receive the right care. Sufferers of this disease and their caretakers need all the support and love they can receive, which is why The Longest Day Event was created.

Fundraiser gives participants choice in how to support association

Around the world, people will come together to fight the darkness of Alzheimers Disease with light on The Longest Day.

The annual Alzheimers Association event is marked on the June 20 summer solstice at 16 hours, that day is the longest of the year with the most amount of light.

The Longest Day is such a wonderful event, said Meg DiPanni, vice president of development for the Alzheimers Association Delaware Valley Chapter. I think the beauty of it is, its really a fundraising event that is able to be tailored to the individual person.

The Longest Day gives participants the opportunity to take part in whatever activity they choose. Some host golf tournaments, group hikes or team runs. Others get more creative, whipping up purple foods and baked goods or planting a garden of forget-me-not flowers.

The activities are different, but the goal is the same: to fundraise for the Alzheimers Association and raise awareness of the disease.

While the event is marked on June 20, most participants fundraise for months or even throughout the year. Fundraising totals are tallied in August.

While the Walk to End Alzheimers is the associations biggest fundraiser, The Longest Day has been gaining traction. The nature of the event also made it highly adaptable to the pandemic and its related closings. Participants turned to the virtual realm to fundraise and publicize their efforts.

Why Is It So Important To Focus On Alzheimers Disease

The Alzheimers Association offers these facts:

    • Worldwide, 55 million people are living with dementia
    • The number of people living with dementia worldwide is set to skyrocket to 78 million by 2030
    • Alzheimers disease kills more than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined
    • More than 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimers disease
    • More than 11 million family and friends provide care to people with Alzheimers disease and other dementias in the us
    • 1 in 3 seniors dies with Alzheimers disease or another dementia

Alzheimers is a form of dementia triggering progressive changes in ones behavior, thinking, and memory. Symptoms may surface slowly and then decline rapidly in later stages. Currently, there is no cure, only treatment. Drastic and variable behavior changes make it difficult to determine the appropriate care needed. Sufferers of Alzheimers and their caretakers need to know they are supported and thought of every day. The Longest Day Event was created by the Alzheimers Association to bring awareness to this disease.

    • Employees at Solberg Manufacturing in the United Kingdom planted a garden as a tribute to the companyâs founder, who passed away after a long battle with Alzheimerâs. Solberg also had teams in the United States and Belgium.
    • Mike Zigomanis hiked in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, but the rest of his team ran, golfed and did Pilates from locations throughout the United States and Canada.

    The Relevance Of Alzheimers

The Alzheimers Association states more than five million people in the US are living with this disease and it is currently the sixth-leading cause of death in the United States. Caregivers number 16.3 million and primarily consist of friends or family, providing up to 18.6 billion hours of unpaid care. It is important to recognize the sacrifices of those caregivers and to help support any who suffers from Alzheimers. The disease is expected to increase to 75 million by 2030 and subsequently rise in relevance and importance to families and those with Alzheimers. The Longest Day is a unique approach to raise Alzheimers awareness and increase research funding.

The Alzheimers Association Holds The Longest Day Fundraiser On Tuesday

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Tuesday is the summer solstice, marking the longest day of the year.

The Alzheimers Association is using the nearly 15 hours of daylight expected to outshine the darkness of Alzheimers in its signature fundraising campaign.

Were inspired by all this light to outshine the darkness of Alzheimers year-round, Emily Rosenberger, constituent events manager for the Alzheimers Association, said.

The fundraiser which happens year-round goes to research for Alzheimers.

Learning about Alzheimers, promoting this conversation, helps with early detection, it helps people recognize symptoms earlier, they know a little bit more of what to expect so unfortunately if that diagnosis happens to them or their loved ones, theyll know what to do after that fact, Rosenberger said.

Since 2014 the Alzheimers Association dedicated the month of June to Alzheimers and brain awareness.

Its just an extra way for us to uplift conversation about Alzheimers about the brain, other forms of dementia, the caregiving process and really shine light on these diseases and bring extra attention and continue the conversation while combatting the stigma surrounding these diseases, Rosenberger said.

Tuesday, fundraisers like walks and Twitch games will be happening across Virginia to raise money for research.

There are also a number of restaurants and breweries participating and donating proceeds to The Longest Day and The Alzheimers Association.

    Pin on Alzheimer

Alzheimers Disease hits close to home for many of our SSE family. It just makes sense for us to partner with the Alzheimers Association to raise awareness and funds to combat this horrible disease.

On June 6th, we held our annual Rib Battle event to benefit the Alzheimers Association. It was an incredible event with tasty food, fun games, and lots and lots of people all coming together to help end Alzheimers. I met up with Kate Mayefske the day before the event to learn more about what the South Central Wisconsin chapter of the Alzheimers Association is all about.

Tell me about the history of the organization/your chapter

The South Central Wisconsin chapter of the Alzheimers Association is one chapter of a national network of chapters. Alzheimers Association was founded in the early 1980 by Jerome Stone, and it is now based in Chicago. It has grown to be involved in care and support services for all those affected by Alzheimers and related types of dementia, including those living with the condition and their loved ones and caregivers. We also advocate at the national and state level, and fund research for better therapy and hopefully a cure.
