Aging Services Alzheimers Association Call On Georgia To Go Purple For Alzheimers & Brain Awareness Month

GEORGIA CHAPTER BOARD MEMBERS REFLECT ON THEIR YEARS SERVING ON THE ...

ATLANTA The Georgia Department of Human Services Division of Aging Services and the Georgia Chapter of the Alzheimers Association are calling on all Georgians to show support for their fellow Georgians living with Alzheimers disease and other dementias as the state observes Alzheimers and Brain Awareness Month.

Gov. Brian P. Kemp has proclaimed June as Alzheimers and Brain Awareness Month in Georgia, joining a nationwide celebration of support for people living with Alzheimers and other forms of dementia.

This is an issue that ultimately touches the lives of all Georgians, DHS Commissioner Robyn A. Crittenden said. It is essential for us to come together as a state to support the needs of this growing population and, one day, hopefully bring an end to Alzheimers. Join us as we go purple in June in honor of those living with this terrible disease.

The Alzheimers Association reported that there are currently more than 150,000 Georgians living with Alzheimers or another form of dementia. By 2025, that number is expected to increase by 26.7% to 190,000 Georgians.

The number of people being diagnosed in Georgia is staggering, said Linda Davidson, executive director of the Georgia Chapter of the Alzheimers Association. Our goal for Alzheimers and Brain Awareness Month is to bring awareness of the disease to allow all people to have a better understanding of what it is as well as find the local resources to help them through their journey.

Making The Greatest Impact For Generations To Come

The MedicAlert Safe Return Program | Alzheimer’s Association – Georgia Chap.

Right now in the United States, the cost of care for Alzheimers is a quarter of a trillion dollars. Couple that with the fast-growing number of people living with Alzheimers, not just today, but over the next several years and it will be a catastrophic situation. This is why funding Alzheimers and dementia research is critical in changing this course.

Atlanta couple Heather and Bill ten Broeke understand the financial, physical, and emotional strain of caring for someone with Alzheimers. Bills father Hank lived with the early stages of Alzheimers for several years before he and Bills mother Judy moved into Heather and Bills home in 2017. Not long after, in honor of Hank, Heather participated in the 2018 Dancing Stars of Atlanta where she won the coveted Peoples Choice Award for raising the most money over $160,000. Since the event, the ten Broekes have been major sponsors of Dancing Stars of Atlanta, which funds care, support, and research programs for the Alzheimers Association.

We are incredibly grateful for the ten Broeke family, added Linda Davidson, Executive Director, Alzheimers Association, Georgia Chapter. Research is our ticket out of this disease and the more dollars donated towards it, the quicker we get to ending it, added Davidson.
