What Is Lewy Body Dementia

A new report that emerged Tuesday about Robin Williams’ death has put a spotlight on the second most commonly diagnosed type of dementia, but one that many people have never heard of.

Lewy body dementia, which affects about 1.3 million Americans, is a type neurodegenerative disease that has many attributes similar to both Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease.

Memory and cognitive problems are some of the common symptoms of Lewy body dementia. But its disease processes are much more closely tied to Parkinson’s disease. Parkinson’s disease and Lewy body dementia are both caused by the buildup of small misfolded protein deposits in brain tissue known as alpha-synuclein. This is a different type of naturally-occurring protein than tau and amyloid plaques, which are the hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease.

Williams’ wife has said he was in “the early stages of Parkinson’s disease” before he committed suicide on Aug. 11.

Lewy body dementia is “very complex and it requires treating a much broader range of symptoms to maximize quality of life,” Angela Taylor, director of programs at the Lewy Body Dementia Association, told CBS News. Symptoms of the disease can include memory, cognitive and motor problems, muscle stiffness, gait problems and hallucinations. Currently there is no cure for Lewy body dementia, which means doctors must help patients manage each of these symptoms independently when they emerge.

Cocker died in Crawford, Colo., where he has lived for the past two decades with his wife, Pam.

The Sheffield, England-born singer was best known for a memorable Woodstock performance in 1969 where he delivered a cover of The Beatles’ With a Little Help From My Friends with almost frightening intensity.

The ballad You Are So Beautiful, with Cocker’s voice cracking on the final emotional note, was a Top 10 hit in 1975. He reached the top of the charts again in the 1980s with the duet Up Where We Belong, with Jennifer Warnes. The song appeared in the movie An Officer and a Gentleman and won them a 1983 Grammy Award for best vocal performance by a duo or group. It also won best original song at the Oscars and the Golden Globes.

“Joe Cocker is a legendary artist of rock and blues history and yet he was one of the most humble men I’ve ever met,” said Edgar Berger, chairman and CEO of Sony Music Entertainment, in a statement. “His iconic voice will forever be etched in our memories. Joe will live on in the hearts of millions of fans around the world.”

“We just had a good day,” Cocker recalled. “We went on real early, and we got a good sound. It took a long time to connect with the audience, though.”

Joe Cocker On John Belushi’s Impression Of Him: I Thought Vocally He Did Quite A Clever Job

My Vinyl Countdown meets Fleet Foxes and flees to Cocker ...

Lee ZimmermanSeptember 28, 20129:00AM

Music vet and scribe Lee Zimmerman shares observations, insights, and updates relating to South Florida’s musical environs. This week, a cool conversation with Joe Cocker.

It’s one of the most indelible images in rock ‘n’ roll, that of Joe Cocker, clad in tie dye, twitching and gyrating onstage at Woodstock, singing with that whiskey-soaked voice that became his stock in trade. For most, it proved an auspicious introduction to a rough-and-tumble young singer from the north of England who had an uncanny ability to interpret well-known material and make it all his own.

In the years to come, Cocker would remain a persistent presence, whether standing at the helm of his own Grease band, sharing the stage with the sprawling communal aggregate christened as Mad Dogs and Englishmen, or straddling the middle of the road with his biggest hit of all, “Up Where We Belong,” the soaring ballad he shared with Jennifer Warnes.

We spoke with the musician about everything from his frustrated stage moves to the clever vocals of John Belushi when impersonating him. Ensconced at his Mad Dog Ranch, in Crawford, Colorado, located in the remote reaches of the Colorado Rockies, Cocker turned out to be surprisingly down-to-earth, willing to open up about his history, and as gracious and engaging as any musician I’ve ever encountered.

Lewy Body Dementia Research Through A Researchers Eyes

DEMENTIA: A Real Family Story of Lewy Body Dementia (LBD)

Jim Leverenz is a neurologist by training, and hes been studying Lewy body disease since the 1980s. Dr. Leverenz is proud to be the Chair of the Lewy Body Dementia Associations Scientific Advisory Council , a post hes held for seven years. Hes been a part of the SAC for more than a decade, providing up-to-date medical and research information, which LBDA uses to create publications for the general public, caregivers, and healthcare professionals. LBDA and the SAC organize scientific meetings, award pilot grants for Lewy body dementia research, and advocate for increased research funding and the needs of LBD families.

Why did you decide to get involved with Lewy body dementia research?

It happened almost by accident. I was an undergraduate student and I wanted to get involved in research. A pathologist I was talking to said we sometimes see these Lewy bodies in people with dementia would that be something youd like to research? I went on to work on one of the first descriptions of the co-existence of Lewy bodies in Alzheimers. And after my medical training, residency, and fellowship, I got back to working in this area in the 1990s. Today I would say Ive had nearly 500 patients with Lewy body dementia under my care. We know much more than we did before, and there are a lot more options than there used to be but there are still miles to go.

Why do you think there are so few studies for Lewy body dementia?

A Song To Show Joe Cocker Was More Than A Master Interpreter

Joe Cocker reinvented the work of Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, Randy Newman and especially Lennon/McCartney so effectively, with such a personal and possessed passion, that every song he sang might as well have been written by the man himself. Check out his reimagining of Julie Londons Cry Me A River once a sultry lament as a raved-up accusatory screed delivered with demonic fire. On a level with Janis Joplin, Cocker was one of the great rock/soul vocalists that came out of the Woodstock era. He was also one of the few pure vocalists that actually did write some of his best songs, but could put his songwriting ego on hold when he saw a higher calling within someone elses material.

What Causes Lewy Body Dementia

Researchers are still trying to figure out why Lewy bodies are evolving in the brain. Although the brain naturally has alpha-synuclein protein through its structure, its normal function is not well understood, nor can scientists explain what causes them to bind together and cause problems, according to the Alzheimers Association.

Unlike Alzheimers, experts at the Lewy Body Dementia Association says LBD is not usually hereditary.

An individuals risk increases if a family member with LBD or Parkinsons disease, says Caccappolo. But there is a very small genetic component to LBD.

So, while its important to be aware, for example, of the fact that your grandfather or grandmother suffered from LBD, its not a strong prediction whether or not you will have it as well.

Does Joe Cocker Have Autism

Joe Cocker is a British singer who is best known for his raspy voice and strange movements when he performs. He has recorded many popular songs, including Feelin All Right and Up Where We Belong. In 1975, during an appearance on the American television show Saturday Night Live, actor John Belushi appeared on stage alongside Cocker, doing a spot-on impersonation of the singers voice and movements. While there has been much speculation that Joe Cocker may suffer from a neurological disorder that causes these jerky movements, there is no evidence that he is on the autism spectrum.
