Georgie Glen Plays Miss Higgins

Who is Miss Higgins? Miss Higgins is the receptionist at Dr Turner’s surgery. She is formidable and bossy, but is also kind-hearted. She has slowly bonded with Nurse Phyllis Crane.

What else has Georgie Glen been in? Georgie Glen is one of those actresses whose face has been everywhere. Recently, she’s played Princess Diana’s grandmother Ruth Lady Fermoy in The Crown, as well as playing Lady Grenford in Hetty Feather, Pat in Sally4Ever, Sue in Behind her Eyes, Rose Kennedy in Oscar-nominated movie Jackie, and the Abbess in Les Misérables. Is Call The Midwife A True Story

Not exactly. The show was inspired by a series of memoirs written by Jennifer Worth, Shadows of the Workhouse, and Farewell to the East End. Though many of the characters and situations, particularly in the early seasons, are borrowed from Worth’s books, the show is nonetheless a work of fiction.

The Call The Midwife Icon Who Looks Completely Different From Sister Monica Joan In Real Life

Beneath all the simplicity and modest robes of a nun, Judy Parfitt is a glamorous actor

Sister Monica Joan has dedicated her whole life to midwifery and helping the poorest of people in London’s East End.

Her family sadly never came to terms with her choices and being a nun was completely scandalised by her relatives.

But of course, Sister Monica Joan followed her faith and is the heartbeat of Nonnatus House – retired from her nursing duties but is always offering her incredibly wise words to her fellow sisters and midwives.

And is also on hand for a slice of cake and pep talk to those nurses who are experiencing a hard time, or are celebrating a milestone in their career.

TV star Judy Parfitt has played Sister Monica Joan in since the very first episode aired on the BBC in 2012, and looks nothing like her character in real-life!

Beneath all the simplicity and modest robes of a nun Judy Parfitt is a glamorous actor who has been around in big British TV shows since the 1960s where she appeared in a number of episodes in the hit spy series The Avengers.

She also received a BAFTA nomination for actress in a supporting role in 2003, for her role as Maria Thins in Girl With a Pearl Earring.

Judy is no stranger to popular television series as she appeared in a long list of hit shows since her acting career began during the 1950s.

‘call The Midwife’ Recap: Season 7 Episode 8

Dr Turner

In the penultimate episode of Season 7, viewers endured the emotional rollercoaster of serious illness and the untimely death of Nurse Barbara Hereward played by Charlotte Ritchie. Other things happened which you can review here in our full recap, but mainly it was this tragedy and the tear-jerking aftermath that dominated episode seven.

This week we braced ourselves for an emotional season finale. And while Barbaras funeral was surprisingly brief, the episode was chockablock with new babies, a birthday celebration, a historical tragedy and poignant moments that honored our dearly departed midwife beautifully.

The Funeral and the Grieving

Valerie and Lucille bring Phyllis tea as she prepares for Barbara’s funeral. She comments that this time last year there was a wedding dress hanging on the picture rail Fred stopped by to give Tom a shave which I found very intimate and touching.

The funeral itself was represented by Phyllis reading of the poem Turn Again to Life by A. Price Hughes and Mary Lee Hall Its fitting that Phyllis asks the mother of a fussy baby not to take her out of the church because none of us objects to the sound of a crying child.

A Baby Boom in Poplar

Yes, I do. It popped into my head, just before, I don’t know why. Barbara. Must have been floating round the room like a moth or a butterfly or something waiting to be caught.

The Call The Midwife Star 85 Who Looks Worlds Apart From Her Character

We would never have recognised her

Beneath all the simplicity and modest robes of a nun Judy Parfitt is a glamorous actor who has been around in big British TV shows since the 1960s where she appeared in a number of episodes in the hit spy series The Avengers.

In Call the Midwife, Sister Monica Joan was born from a well-to-do family but chose to become a midwife and commit her life to religion against their wishes, becoming one of the first qualified in the country.

Now in her nineties she has a strained relationship with her family as a result which the show often touches on.

A lovable, cake obsessed and often confused character due to her age and suffering from early stages of dementia, Monica Joan has become a favourite of fans of the BBC One show.

Judy has said about her character: “She comes from a good family and shes an innocent. Shes very eccentric but shes also getting dementia so shes in and out of reality which makes it really interesting to play because its a very difficult line to get through.

Judy, 85 herself, is still going strong and looks completely different to Monica Joan, who due to her life as a nun is always wearing her robes head to toe, meaning fans of the show will have never seen Judy’s golden hair.

To Say Call The Midwife Isnt Woke Enough For The Baftas Is Plain Wrong

The long-running show aims to be progressive, dealing with all topics from domestic violence to dementia. But its time-slot hints otherwise

Is the BBCs long-running period drama missing out on awards because its not considered edgy enough? Thats the view of 85-year-old actress Judy Parfitt, who has played the eccentric Sister Monica Joan since s premiere in 2012.

Speaking to the Radio Times ahead of its 10th season, which debuts this Sunday, she denied that the show was cosy, noting that its dealt with incest, thalidomide everything you can think of. But, she added, whats interesting is that you dont see it nominated for Baftas. People want to be woke and feel that they cant nominate Call the Midwife.

Its certainly true that the Baftas have completely snubbed the show, despite it regularly exceeding audiences of 10 million numbers that most dramas, in this era of streamers and fractured viewership, could only dream of. The one exception is Baftas Radio Times Audience Award as voted for by the public, rather than Bafta juries and members which it won in 2013.

Stephen McGann, who plays Dr Turner in the series, and whose wife Heidi Thomas is the shows creator and writer, has also lamented their lack of recognition. Since it started, never been shortlisted for a major television screenwriting prize, he pointed out.

So, if the programme is actually a woke dream, why isnt it getting the big prizes?

What Did Viewers Say About Call The Midwifes Train Crash Ending

Call the Midwife | Sister Monica Joan: ‘I Am Not Yet Dead! | Season 10 Episode 3 Clip | PBS

Viewers were left stunned by the ending of last nights episode. The potential death of two characters who had been on the show since Call the Midwife launched in 2012 was too much for some.

How am I supposed to think about anything other than #CallTheMidwife for the next week? one viewer asked.

Oh God, watching that #CallTheMidwife come together Mr. Corbetts headaches, the approaching trip to Chelmsford, the rift opening between Patrick and Tim, & of course the many portents of doom made that one of the most terrifying episodes theyve ever done. Im in bits, another said.

Youll Never Walk Alone

At Nonnatus House, they dont need Dr. Turners tray to figure out whats missing. Everyone knows exactly whats missing: Barbara. Tom turns up at Nonnatus House carrying suitcases containing Barbaras belongings. He doesnt know where else to take them. Sister Winifred thinks it is too soon for him to be disposing of his wifes belongings. She asks if he would advise a parishioner who had just lost his wife to do that? He says he advises parishioners to do one gesture to begin the process of moving forward, and this is his one gesture Barbara always loved to take care of people and she would want her clothes to help someone. Sister Winfred says the person Barbara would most want to help now is him, but since Barbara cannot be here to do it, she will. She will hold everything for safekeeping, until he knows his mind better.

He tells Sister Winifred Barbaras father wants him to go with him to a mission in New Guinea, but he cant go without Barbara, but cant leave her behind either. He is in a kind of Pergatory.

A Decade Of Call The Midwife

Its now over ten years since Call the Midwife started filming. And thats unbelievable! says Judy. When we started it was just for six episodes and I cant tell you how quickly the time has flown by. When you think that its a decade Well, thats why weve become like a family, why were so protective of each other and the show.

Were all so very proud of it because it touches on some very difficult subjects and has presented them all beautifully. The writing is fantastic I dont know how they do it and I keep saying, Dont you want to kill me off, yet?

Im always constantly amazed at the amount of mail I get and the amount of people who stop me to say, Is it coming back? and then being so happy when they hear it is. Call the Midwife touches something in people that Ive never seen before. They feel like they own it, in a way. I suppose they feel theyve grown up with it over the last ten years. I think it also has something to do with the time period its set in. While the Fifties and now the Sixties were not without fault, in many ways it was a kinder, more gentle time.

Is Judy Parfitt Still In Call The Midwife

Yes – thankfully Sister Monica Joan is still going strong in series 10 and 11! Back in 2017 Judy hinted that she might leave after series six ended, worrying that ill health might force her to leave.

However, during a recent interview with Yours, when asked if there was ever a question of her not returning for the tenth series of Call the Midwife, Judy pulls no punches!

Well, you know age is just a number,” says Judy. “Youll know Im not coming back to Call the Midwife when Im dead! Or I cant do it anymore or they dont want me anymore.

The absolute thing about age is that while we should be aware of it, we shouldnt treat older people as if theyre all completely mentally deficient. I moved into a new house a while back and had a new bath put in which was very deep and thin, which made it tricky to get in and out of. I arranged to have a handle put into the wall so I could pull myself up. The plumber came, sat in the bath himself and saw that it wasnt easy to get out of but he said, Lets get on to the disabled people and see if they have anything. I replied, Look love, I may be as old as Methuselah but Im not disabled yet!

Although very grateful to even be able to film the 10th series of Call the Midwife, Judy says the restrictions were a trial and, as usual, she doesnt sugar-coat her words!

And how would Sister Monica Joan have coped with living through the last 18 months?

Leonie Elliott Plays Nurse Lucille Robinson

Who is Nurse Lucille Anderson? Originally from Jamaica, Lucille travelled alone to England in 1960 to train as a nurse. After she qualified, she became the first West Indian midwife ever to join Nonnatus House arriving in the snowy first episode of series seven. Lucille has a strong Christian faith, and a fledgeling courtship with local mechanic Cyril which saw them marry in the 2021 Christmas spercial.

What else has Leonie Elliott been in? Call the Midwife was a breakout role for the young actress, but she’s also appeared in the Black Mirror episode Hated in the Nation and TV movie Killed by My Debt. Leonie Elliott’s other credits include in Casualty, Boogie Man and Damned, and Lenny Henrys BBC comedy drama Danny and the Human Zoo.
