The CDP® is a certification and not a credential .
For this certification, you have to meet the qualifications of the application and then complete the 7-hour seminar.
While an exam is not required, some seminar instructors may choose to give an exam to make sure that you understood the course. Nothing scary though!
You show up and take the seminar and then think of the exam as a knowledge check.
Please note that you will complete an evaluation after the seminar, but that is not an exam.

Dementia is a spectrum of disorders of the brain, most commonly effecting memory, cognition, reasoning, mood, and coordination. It is an affliction that is growing rapidly in the United States with the aging of America. One in 10 adults 65 and older is afflicted with Alzheimers, the most common form of dementia. Currently, more than 5 million Americans have Alzheimers.
As the number of older Americans grows rapidly, so too will the number of new and existing cases of Alzheimer’s. By 2050, the number of people age 65 and older with Alzheimers dementia may grow to a projected 13.8 million, barring the development of medical breakthroughs to prevent, slow or cure Alzheimers disease. How Long Does The Cdp Credential Last
This certification is good for two years. If you want to be recertified you need to complete 10 hours of continuing education , reapply, and pay the $145 in renewal fees.
The CDP® renewal paperwork is found online and costs the same as the initial application. Please note: you do NOT have to complete the training again.
Why Become A Certified Dementia Practitioner
The CDP® is not a license or a requirement to work with those with dementia. Rather it is a certification for those who want to go above and beyond in the care they provide.

I have a lot of experience in caregiving and working with seniors. I have found the DAWN tools to be very helpful. One of the tools is mood management. I have a client who is often frustrated by not being able to find the words she wants to say. When we get in my car, I point out the beauty in the sky and clouds, describing them for her, and then tell her they remind me of a favorite song. We start singing Theres a Blue Sky Way Up Yonder. Singing is her happy place, where she can experience a positive mood. When I tell her that she taught me a cowboy song back when I first knew her and we begin singing it, she always feels so good to have given me something beautiful, too.
The DAWN tool of social success has worked so well with another client. When she and I are out, we often meet a friend of hers from church. At first, her friend would constantly ask her questions and she would become very nervous and embarrassed. Using the social success tool, I began to ask the friend questions and get the friend to open up and tell us about herself and her friendship with my client. Soon my clients friend learned to look at her and include her in what she was saying, but not ask questions. My client now greatly enjoys meeting this friend, loves having conversations with her, and no longer feels threatened.

Where Is Certification Required
There is currently no national requirement for memory care certification. To varying degrees, some states and individual employers require licensure. According to the most recent data from 2015, only 23 states required dementia training for all staff of nursing homes, while 19 states required dementia training for adult day staff, and 13 states required the training for licensed home health aides.
Washington state has historically been a leader in dementia care training legislation, requiring all care professionals who come to contact with dementia patients to undergo rigorous dementia training. Some states, such as Ohio and Michigan, only require this training for carers operating in specialized dementia units.
However, the landscape is continually evolving. Massachusetts and Minnesota, for example, recently passed bills that became, making licensure a requirement among care professionals who come into contact with dementia patients. In March of 2022, Kentucky set minimum training requirements for direct care staff members at facilities that provide services to individuals who exhibit symptoms of Alzheimers disease or other dementias.
