As Alzheimers Awareness Month comes to a close, members of the California Southland Chapter of the Alzheimers Association are urging African Americans and Latinos to get educated on the warning signs of Alzheimers disease something they say is critical in addressing the disparities in health care among the two communities. They are also letting them know that staff and volunteers are available to help.
Carl V. Hill, Ph.D, MPH, who is the chief diversity, equity and inclusion officer for the organization, said the campaign is important because often, residents in underserved communities are diagnosed when it is too late to receive adequate care and support for both patients and caregivers.
Hill, a Morehouse College alum, said he developed a passion for social justice in healthcare there, where the legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and the Civil Rights Era was rooted.
For Alzheimers in particular, it was his work with the National Institute of Aging that shed light on the need for education among African Americans who make up almost 20 percent
This higher risk, or incidence, of Alzheimers and other dementias, according to the groups website, appears to stem from variations in medical conditions, health-related behaviors and socioeconomic risk factors across racial groups.

Alzheimer’s Mortality Trends In Los Angeles County California
The national rate of Alzheimer’s deaths rose sharply starting in 2013. This sudden increase may be due in part to changes made to diagnostic protocols in 2011. Because Alzheimers is only listed as the underlying cause of death in individuals previously diagnosed before death, an increase in diagnoses would likely cause a concurrent increase in deaths attributed to Alzheimers.

Alzheimers disease is one that is especially pertinent to the aging population. As people live longer into their 80s and 90s they have a higher risk of developing Alzheimers disease and other dementias. It is said that 1 in 10 older adults are diagnosed with some type of dementia.
Californiais home to the nations largest population of Asian American older adults, and thatfigure is likely to increase. Despite these rising rates, many within these communitiesstruggle to report symptoms of dementia to medical professionals. According tostudies, cultural stigma is one reason that symptoms are under-reported. Additionally,the signs of dementia can sometimes be interpreted as mental illness, triggeringnegative responses that ultimately prevent people from seeking help that theyneed.
A specialproject in the community wants to change that. Alzheimers Los Angeles isreaching the community through an innovative educational video series, Facesof Caregiving. With funding from the Keiro Grants Program, the organizationseeks to educate people about dementia while also destigmatizing its diagnosis.

La Chapter Splitting From National Alzheimers Association
The Los Angeles-area chapter of the Alzheimers Association is splitting from the national organization, the latest in a string of departures that could impact the national groups bottom line.
The chapter, which covers Los Angeles, Riverside and San Bernardino counties, announced its decision Thursday to separate and form its own organization. Chapters in San Diego and Orange County, California announced similar plans late last year, as did chapters in New York City and New Jersey.
The departures come after the Alzheimers Association voted last fall to consolidate into one national organization that will centrally manage the funds and programs for people living with the disease throughout the United States.
Currently, local chapters are affiliated with the umbrella national group and help fund its operations and research. But they are independent nonprofits that keep about 60 percent of the money they raise and largely set their own priorities on how to spend it. Under the new structure, the Chicago-based national headquarters will be the only legal entity of the Alzheimers Association.
The Los Angeles-area chapter decided to go out on its own because of concerns that the consolidation would take away local flexibility and make it harder to provide services tailored to the diverse population of Southern California, said Susan Galeas, president and CEO of the new organization, known as Alzheimers Greater Los Angeles.
