The Alzheimers Association Research Grant award aims to fund early-career investigators who are less than 15 years past their doctoral degree or post-residency .
The purpose of this program is to provide newly independent investigators with funding that will allow them to develop preliminary or pilot data, to test procedures and to develop hypotheses. The intent is to support early-career development that will lay the groundwork for future research grant applications to federal or other funding entities.
The mechanism of this award is the individual research grant. The Alzheimers Association recognizes the need to increase the number of scientists from underrepresented groups in the research enterprise for Alzheimers and all other dementia. Young scientists from these groups are encouraged to apply
Applicants must be an Assistant Professors or above at their respective academic institution and less than 15 years past their doctoral degree or post-residency .
- If the applicants institution does not have an Assistant Professor position, the letter of employment should include sufficient information to allow the Alzheimers Association staff to evaluate the eligibility of the applicant.
APPLICANTS MUST CONTACT THE ALZHEIMERS ASSOCIATION AT TO VERIFY ELIGIBILITY IF THEY DO NOT HAVE AN ASSISTANT PROFESSOR TITLE AND INQUIRE REGARDING ANY POSSIBLE EXCEPTION PRIOR TO SUBMITTING AN LOI.
NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE MADE AFTER THE LOI DEADLINE HAS PASSED.

Cds Professor Carlos Fernandez
CDS Professor Carlos Fernandez-Granda recently received the Alzheimers Association Research Grant New to the Field . The award seeks to provide researchers with the appropriate funding to establish a research path in Alzheimers and all other dementias.
According to the Alzheimers Association, which is the largest non-profit funder of Alzheimers research, more than six million Americans are currently living with the disease. AD kills more people than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined, and deaths have increased by 16% during the COVID-19 pandemic. It goes without saying that there is a strong need for continued research in this area.
The objective of Carlos project is to leverage magnetic-resonance imaging using machine learning to perform early detection of AD. Development of this technique could lead to automatic early diagnosis, which would improve clinicians ability to select appropriate care, enable quicker access to treatment for patients, and clarify treatment timeline and course of action for caregivers. It would also inform health agency decisions on how to best allocate resources and facilitate effective selection of participants in clinical trials.

The objective of this award is to increase the number of highly trained investigators from diverse backgrounds whose basic, clinical and social/behavioral research interests are grounded in the advanced methods and experimental approaches needed to solve problems related to Alzheimer’s and all other dementias in general and in health disparities populations. The Alzheimer’s Association recognizes the need to increase the number of scientists from underrepresented groups participating in biomedical and behavioral research. We anticipate that by providing these research opportunities, the number of scientists from underrepresented groups entering and remaining in biomedical research careers in Alzheimer’s and all other dementia will increase.
Each AARG-D award total is limited to $200,000 for up to three years . Requests may not exceed $70,000 in any given year . Indirect costs are capped at 10 percent of total direct costs and are inclusive of indirect costs for the implementing institution as well as to any subcontracts.

We wish to congratulate Assistant Professor Gefei Chen, at the Department of Biosciences and Nutrition, Karolinska Institutet, who has been awarded a career supporting grant of USD 150 000 for three years from the Alzheimer’s Association .
He received this grant to evaluate the therapeutic potential of the domain BRICHOS against Alzheimer’s disease by simultaneously targeting the two hallmarks – amyloid-ß peptide and tau protein.

How might damage to head direction cells increase ones risk of Alzheimers?
Research PlanBenjamin Clark, Ph.D., and colleagues plan to test the hypothesis that spatial disorientation in early Alzheimers disease is due in part to an impaired head-direction cell system. For this effort, they will use a novel mouse model engineered to develop beta-amyloid, tau, and other Alzheimers-related brain changes. They will assess whether the mice develop changes to the structure and activity of their head-direction cells, and whether these changes are associated with poor performance on spatial orientation tasks. Such work will involve sophisticated techniques for imaging brain cells and recording electrical cellular function from this network of cells.
