GPS trackers are devices that are used for determining and tracking the exact location of carriers. The location can be then recorded and stored on the device or transmitted to a central database. GPS trackers are essential for the protection of lives as well as movable property.

GPS trackers let you know the precise real-time location of any object, animal, or individual by simply tracking your focus with a GPS receiver device. Models designed specifically for seniors place an emphasis on functions that improve safety, including emergency buttons and health metrics.

Location Technologies For Seniors Living With Dementia

The panic and anxiety people feel when they are frantically trying to find a missing loved one is almost unbearable, and the video does do a good job of relaying that message. However, it is because of this fear that so many families have experienced that people are turning to real-time tracking devices with GPS enabled panic buttons to help families quickly and safely find an elderly loved one who has gone missing. Those who have knowledge that their elderly family members are showing signs of dementia or other memory-related illnesses can use hard-wire cables to permanently install a live GPS tracking unit to the seniors vehicle, and the senior GPS tracker can then be used to send out alerts and location-based data. The GPS data is displayed over a web-based application or via smartphone, making it easy to locate a person with dementia wandering.

GPS tracking systems can also be used as portable devices that elderly people suffering from dementia can keep in their pockets.

The Pros And Cons Of Geolocation Tools For Seniors

The adoption of GPS medical technology has its pros and cons. Before purchasing and jumping into using a GPS medical device read the list below to determine if utilizing this technology is the right choice for you and your loved one.

Those that use a GPS tool to monitor their loved ones have noted that it does offer the ability for both the wearer and caregiver to live an independent life but remain connected in the event of an emergency.

The downside of using a GPS tool is misguided safety. Overly relying on the device may give the wearer more freedom but that can come with decreased physical interaction and connection. Requiring the device to be on the person at all times can prove difficult if the wearer simply removes it or leaves it at home. Also, privacy can become a source of contention since the device will be tracking and monitoring the wearer at all times.

The information below describes the pros and cons of the specific geolocation tools in more detail.

Gps Trackers Vs Medical Alert Systems: Whats The Difference

GPS Tracking Watch For Elderly / Dementia

There are a few different types of GPS trackers on the market, but the two most common are adult GPS trackers and medical alert systems. Adult GPS trackers are designed to help seniors keep tabs on their whereabouts and health, while medical alert systems provide emergency notification in case of an illness or injury.

However, there are some key differences between the two types of devices. For example, adult GPS trackers typically dont have built-in cameras or microphones, whereas medical alert systems often do. Additionally, adult GPS trackers usually dont have as many features as medical alert systems, such as tracking sleep patterns and daily activities.

The 30 Best Gps Trackers For Seniors

There are plenty of devices out there that can be used to improve the lives of seniors. GPS trackers allow caregivers to keep an eye on their loved ones when theyre out and about, helping to ensure their safety. GPS trackers specifically designed for seniors put an emphasis on functions that enhance safety, including emergency buttons that alert caregivers, services that contact emergency responders, and tools to monitor health metrics.

For seniors with Alzheimers disease or dementia, as well as other conditions that make them prone to wandering, a GPS tracker can be a lifesaver. Even if you live in a state with a Silver Alert program, a GPS tracker for seniors can provide peace of mind in knowing that you can quickly locate your loved one should they wander or become lost. And they dont have to be large and obtrusive in fact, many modern GPS trackers are discreet, allowing your loved one to keep them in the bottom of a bag or even around their neck. Being able to locate your loved one if they vanish could literally save their life.

Benefits For Loved Ones

When a loved one with dementia wanders off, it is a terrifying experience for their family and friends. Its easy for our minds to jump to the worst-case scenario, even when the individual who wandered off could be just around the corner.

Although its cant eliminate their fear entirely, GPS tracking watches do help reduce the anxiety and stress of caregivers. As long as they can ensure their loved one with dementia wears their watch and doesnt remove it, caregivers are able to give them more freedom to go about their day without worrying that theyll become lost.

Another benefit for loved ones is that this eliminates the scenario of coordinating searches if they do wander off. Often, caregivers have to form search parties, communicate the logistics of the search, and notify emergency services if necessary. However, with a GPS tracker, this can be avoided for the most part.

All I can say is WOW. This really has allowed my dad to maintain his independence, whilst also feeling confident knowing that if something were to go wrong, we would be notified and can get help on its way to him. Its much cheaper and easier to use than anything else we have seen and one of the features we love most is that my siblings and our partners can all download the same app and we can all keep an eye out together. Not to mention, the customer support team is also top notch I hope this never changes as the company expands as it truly is an amazing feature being able to have all your queries answered at a speedy rate.

I have been so pleasantly surprised! I am not very tech savvy myself so was a bit worried that I would be out of my depth with this product but it is very simple to set up and easy to use. We havent had it for long, but it really has eased my anxieties as my father in law has never been good with phones but has always worn a watch so doesnt mind it one bit. Would recommend to anyone dealing with someone with dementia

Today’s Gps Tracker Watches For Dementia Generally Aren’t Fit For Purpose

You may notice a lot of devices on the market looking like the ones illustrated here and above – claiming to be GPS Tracker Watches for dementia, Alzheimer’s or elderly use. They’re actually designed for children.

Manufacturers steered towards cheap quality materials and components as part of the smart watch and app revolution. There’s a much bigger market for such devices, and being mostly aimed at children they’re produced cheaply – being more casual, disposable and easily damaged.

Some companies market these GPS tracker watches for dementia, because they don’t know their market or the needs of someone tracking someone with dementia.

    • They’re in no way fit for purpose:
    • Battery life is often less than a day
    • The materials erode and break easily under the strains of daily wear
    • They rely on apps which are buggy and non-reliable
    • They aren’t fully text-message programmable, meaning carers have to download the buggy apps
    • Being so small and cheaply made, the mobile and GPS reception is very poor, meaning patchy signals and inaccurate responses
    • They aren’t waterproof or tamperproof

Alarms And Tracking Devices For Alzheimers Patients

Alzheimers is a form of dementia that affects the brain, causing memory loss and other cognitive impacts. This disorder is common with aged people due to a reduced immune system and body strength. Everything slowly becomes unfamiliar to those with Alzheimers, making it harder to adapt to new environments. Its challenging to manage people suffering from this disorder since they can wander and go missing. However, there are now devices to track Alzheimers patients without interfering with their lifestyle. Caregivers can use devices to monitor a patients location, ensuring they do not stray from safe areas.

Below is a list of lifesaving GPS devices designed to help elderly who may have Alzheimers.

    1. AngelSense

AngelSense is a device that provides comprehensive information about various activities performed by a patient. A caregiver attaches this device to the patients clothes, and the caregiver is the only person who can unlock it. The device shows a patients direction and the distance they already traveled. The device also provides the caregiver with a timeline of locations visited daily, including the transit speed at a particular point in time. Also, it instantly alerts the caregivers in case a patient gets lost or goes a dangerous area. The caregivers can view the activities happening around a patient. AngelSense enables easier and efficient communication between caregivers and a patient.

    Autonomy Control Safety And Privacy

Like many “caregiving products”, these location devices and trackers raise important issues of privacy, control, and autonomy.

One of the things that come up again and again in conversations among groups of older adults is the desire to maintain autonomy as long as is realistic.

Of course, declining cognition impacts the ability to stay independent in many ways. And at some point, as dementia progesses, autonomy probably has to become limited to keep the person healthy and safe.

There are also often tradeoffs to be made between autonomy and privacy, and between safety and privacy.

For example, if someone knows where you are at all times, that may well enhance your safety. But it definitely impinges on your privacy.

And, if the alternatives are “don’t leave the house”, or “go where you want, but surrender some privacy so we can help if something goes wrong”, that is a tradeoff between autonomy and privacy many would choose to make.

How Location Devices & Dementia Trackers Work

DemenTrack – Real-time GPS Tracker for Wandering Dementia

Being able to know where someone is at a given point in time is the essence of this category of products.

In 2020, they all work in a similar way. The person to be located or tracked needs to have a “thing” on them, which can locate itself using some type of reference .

In some scenarios, the “thing” also needs to be capable of sending a signal to some sort of receiver that tells the person holding the receiver where the person they are trying to locate is.

The “thing” that is on the person being “located” is usually a pendant, or a tag, or a watch, or a bracelet, or a cellphone.

In the scenarios where a second person needs to do the “locating”, the “thing” sends a signal to the “receiver” which is in the hands of the person doing the locating. The receiver is usually an App on a smartphone or a computer, although it can also be a small piece of stand alone electronics.

There are two pieces of key technology involved. The “thing” on the person being tracked needs to be able to figure out where it is. This is often done with GPS, although there are other technologies also used .

For reasons of battery management, the “thing” typically locates itself every few minutes , or even less frequently for some products. So, as you use these products, you need to keep in mind that the location is sometimes “not exactly current”.

Different products have different approaches to managing this, including some which allow you to “request a location update” when you need it.

Scenario : Caregiver Needs A Perimeter Alert

This is a bit different to the other scenarios. And if you need this, you will likely also need the features of scenario 3.

If you just need a perimeter alert for a geography, and don’t mind if the alert is relatively slow, then the various geo-fencing solutions above should work pretty well. Just be aware that the GPS location process happens intermittently to help manage battery life. So the “alert” may happen some time after the person leaves the area.

If you need a more “instant” perimeter alert, then you may need a different approach. See the discussion of “” above.

How Do Medical Alert Systems Work

Need an alert system for someone who rarely leaves their home or yard? Want a device that wears like a smartwatch? Osmile ED1000 GPS Watch is the one yo needed!

Medical alert systems are designed to enable older adults to maintain their independence and age safely in place. If this is your first time learning about these devices, you will probably be amazed to see the variety of products for differing tastes and needs.Maybe you’ve heard these systems referred to as Personal Emergency Response Systems .Different name same around-the-clock protection for seniors.

Heres how medical alert systems work:

A medical alert system operates either via landline connection or a cellular connection . Most companies that sell medical alert systems offer one or more of three types of systems: in-home, mobile, and hybrid. Of course, smartwatch alert systems are hybrid they can be used at home and on-the-go, and they are powered via a cellular signal .

The in-home system is especially important for seniors who live alone. This type of system usually includes a base unit that should be placed in a central location in the house. The base unit is like the central nervous system everything else runs through it. It might feel a little weird at first, but if you end up choosing one of these, you will be talking to a response center associate through this box-like communicator.
