Eating to Prevent Alzheimer’s Disease

One in three senior citizens dies with Alzheimers disease or another form of dementia. So its no surprise that medical researchers have spent decades looking for a way to prevent or treat cognitive decline.

A new systematic review discounts one option on the list of potential preventative measures. A meta-analysis published by the Cochrane Collaboration found limited evidence that vitamin and mineral supplements help to prevent or treat dementia or Alzheimers disease.

The systematic review collected data from 28 studies with more than 83,000 participants. Studies included a wide variety of dietary supplements in various combinations and doses, including beta carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin D and calcium, zinc, copper, selenium, and combinations of B vitamins.

Researchers parsed the data into two time framesfollowing participants for 3 to 12 months or 10 years or moreto find out if the supplements made a difference in the short or long term.

While the quality of the data did not allow researchers to make definitive conclusions, they did not find any quality evidence that vitamin or mineral supplements have a meaningful effect on cognitive decline or dementia. The study did find some weak evidence that taking antioxidant vitaminsbeta carotene, vitamin C and vitamin Eover the long term may be of some help, but more evidence is needed to draw a firm conclusion.

Increasing Vitamin D Levels Could Stave Off Dementia

Low vitamin D levels are linked to a higher risk of dementia and stroke. Increasing levels of vitamin D among those who are deficient may help prevent dementia. The corresponding study was published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Dementia is a chronic and progressive condition that leads to the deterioration of cognitive function. Around 55 million people worldwide live with dementia, and there are around 10 million new cases each year.

In the present study, researchers analyzed health records from 284, 514 individuals from the UK Biobank, including vitamin D levels and incidence of dementia or stroke. The researchers included genetic and neuroimaging data in their analysis.

In the end, they found that vitamin D deficiency was linked to an increased risk for dementia and stroke. Those with vitamin D levels- measured via 25-hydroxy vitamin D D)- of under 25 nmol/L were most likely to develop dementia.

The researchers further found that those with vitamin D levels of 25 nmol/L were 54% more likely to develop dementia than those with vitamin D levels of 50 nmol/L. These results remained after extensive covariate adjustment.

The researchers concluded that their findings suggest that 17% of dementia cases could be prevented by increasing vitamin D levels from 25 nmol/L to 50 nmol/L.

Dr. Kristine Yaffe

University of California, San Francisco

The more conservative report, from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine in 2017, relied primarily on large randomized clinical trials.

There arent many of those, so the panel endorsed just three interventions supported by encouraging but inconclusive evidence, to prevent, delay or slow cognitive decline.

The three:

  • Blood pressure management for people with hypertension, particularly in midlife

  • And cognitive training.

That last recommendation doesnt necessarily refer to commercial online brain games, said Dr. Kristine Yaffe, a neuropsychiatrist and epidemiologist at the University of California, San Francisco, who served on the panel.

Its really the concept of being mentally active, she said. Find something you enjoy where youre learning something new, challenging and stimulating your brain.

Though the evidence to date doesnt establish which mental workouts have the greatest impact or how often people should engage in them, theyre not expensive and they dont cause side effects, Dr. Yaffe pointed out.

The blood pressure recommendation got a boost in January with the latest findings from the Sprint trial, a multisite study stopped early in 2015 when intensive treatment of hypertension was shown to reduce cardiovascular events and deaths.

The investigators continued the trial, however, with 9,361 participants who had hypertension and completed follow-up cognitive assessments.

Probiotic Supplements For Dementia

Foods that can help prevent dementia

Probiotics play a critical role in the bodys ability to properly absorb and process nutrients. The gut microflora the bacteria, viruses, yeasts, and other organisms living in the human digestive tract continue to show an influence on cognitive health across clinical research studies. The make-up of someones gut microflora is seen to influence the brain and behavior in diseases such as Alzheimers and Parkinsons disease. Research into the ever-important role of gut flora in disease is even supported by the University of Texas Health and Science Center, one of the largest medical research centers in the world.

Additionally, there are gut microflora signatures that may be associated with the onset and progression of Alzheimers disease. Studies continuously suggest that tailoring the gut microflora with supplemental probiotics may be therapeutic for dementia.

How can I find out about a persons specific gut-flora health?

You can find out more information about your loved ones gut microflora by taking an at-home gut microbiome test, which can help you to identify deficiencies for more tailored supplement options. There are many at-home biome tests, but a popular option for home use remains the Viome Gut Intelligence Test, which can be purchased online and shipped to your home.
