Researchers parsed the data into two time framesfollowing participants for 3 to 12 months or 10 years or moreto find out if the supplements made a difference in the short or long term.

While the quality of the data did not allow researchers to make definitive conclusions, they did not find any quality evidence that vitamin or mineral supplements have a meaningful effect on cognitive decline or dementia. The study did find some weak evidence that taking antioxidant vitaminsbeta carotene, vitamin C and vitamin Eover the long term may be of some help, but more evidence is needed to draw a firm conclusion.

Low vitamin D levels are linked to a higher risk of dementia and stroke. Increasing levels of vitamin D among those who are deficient may help prevent dementia. The corresponding study was published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

The researchers further found that those with vitamin D levels of 25 nmol/L were 54% more likely to develop dementia than those with vitamin D levels of 50 nmol/L. These results remained after extensive covariate adjustment.

The researchers concluded that their findings suggest that 17% of dementia cases could be prevented by increasing vitamin D levels from 25 nmol/L to 50 nmol/L.
