Additional amenities might be available, depending on each community.

Both dementia or memory care and assisted living facilities offer supportive care to people with a range of health issues, including cognitive impairments. But with dementia care, the entire community is structured around the unique needs of people with dementia. This means that dementia care tends to be much more comprehensive, and residents days are spent with people highly experienced at managing dementia. Should I Feel Guilty When Considering A Memory Care Facility For My Loved One

Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia are frequently a progressive disease. Over time, a senior’s memory loss increases which prevents the ability to live independently. The level of care needed becomes too great for family and other caregivers to manage. Once the memory loss progresses and becomes more advanced it becomes difficult to safely remain in a home setting.

Advanced dementia requires a safe, secure setting with care provided 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In advanced dementia and memory loss people have an increasingly difficult time with activities of daily living . These activities include dressing, bathing and using the toilet. Many times additional cognitive issues worsen and create issues such as aggression, disorientation, and confusion.

The demands of caring for a loved one with dementia can become increasingly difficult for caregivers at home. Many times the caregivers health begins to deteriorate due to the stress and demands of caring for the family member with dementia. A Memory Care community offers the care and support needed to properly and effectively care for those with memory loss alleviating the stress and pressure on family and caregivers.

Can You Use Medicare To Pay For Memory Care In New Jersey

Unfortunately, Medicare does not generally cover the cost of Memory Care. Most Memory Care Facilities are considered to be “social settings,” so Medicare does not cover the cost incurred in these facilities. The only exception to that is if you are receiving memory care services in a Nursing Home. While this situation is much less common, Medicare would sometimes cover the cost, depending on a number of circumstances.

That being said, Medicare does still cover qualified doctor visits, medications, etc., as it would if you were still at home, but it will not cover the cost of care received at the Memory Care Facility.

What Is The Difference Between Dementia Care And A Nursing Home

Common Issues With Dementia

Nursing homes and dementia or memory care facilities both offer dementia and Alzheimers care, round the clock staff, and supervision to keep residents safe. Dementia care communities offer specialized staff members who are trained in issues with dementia care, and offer a structured day of activities that help to prevent behaviors associated with anxiety and depression. Meals are prepared to preserve dignity and independence, and environmental features are designed to keep residents safe and secure.
