Relationship With Jeffrey Epstein
A New York Times article reported that Gates’s relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein started in 2011, just a few years after Epstein’s conviction, and continued for some years, including a visit to Epstein’s house with Melinda in the fall of 2013, despite her declared discomfort. Gates said in 2011 about Epstein: “His lifestyle is very different and kind of intriguing although it would not work for me”.
The depth of the friendship between Gates and Epstein is unclear. Gates generally commented about his relationship with Epstein that “I met him. I didn’t have any business relationship or friendship with him”. However, Gates visited Epstein “many times, despite past”. Gates took at least one flight in 2013 in Epstein’s infamous Lolita Express aircraft.
It was reported that Epstein and Gates “discussed the Gates Foundation and philanthropy”. However, in an interview in 2019 Gates completely denied any connection between Epstein and the Gates Foundation or his philanthropy generally. In August 2021, Gates said the reason he had meetings with Epstein was because Gates hoped Epstein could provide money for philanthropic work, though nothing came of the idea. Gates added, “It was a huge mistake to spend time with him, to give him the credibility of being there.”

Bill Gates, who is donating $100 million to help find a cure for Alzheimers disease, has revealed in an interview that his 92-year-old father, Bill Gates Sr., has the illness.
Gates made the disclosure in an interview with journalist Maria Shriver on NBCs Today program. Shrivers father, former activist and politician Sargent Shriver, died of Alzheimers in 2011.
Gates, 62, noted the enormous emotional and financial toll Alzheimers takes on families, and the fact that an aging population will make the disease more common without effective treatments.
Only by solving problems like this can we take these medical costs and the human tragedy and really get these under control, he told Shriver.
He admitted to worrying that he also might contract Alzheimers one day, saying he wanted my brain to stay intact as long as possible.
The Microsoft cofounder is also cochair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the worlds largest private foundation. But this money is coming from his personal fortune.
He hopes the money will encourage new routes to research for the disease, which is difficult to treat and for which there is no known cure.
More and more people are getting Alzheimers, and its a tragic disease,” he told Shriver. “I really believe that if we orchestrate the right resources, its solvable.
The Philanthropist Has Watched Family Members Struggle With The Disease

The fight against Alzheimers disease has a powerful new ally: Bill Gates. The Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist announced a $100 million pledge toward disease research.
Alzheimers is the sixth-leading cause of death in the U.S., and more than 93,000 died of the disease in 2014. The Alzheimers Association estimates that more than 5 million Americans currently live with the condition. About 10 percent of people over age 65 are thought to have it two-thirds are women.
Gates personal connection to the disease In a November 13 blog post called Why Im Digging Deep Into Alzheimers, Gates wrote he understood the financial and emotional costs of the degenerative neurological conditionto both the healthcare system and families.
This is something I know a lot about, because men in my family have suffered from Alzheimers, he said. I know how awful it is to watch people you love struggle as the disease robs them of their mental capacity, and there is nothing you can do about it. It feels a lot like youre experiencing a gradual death of the person that you knew.
As part of his post, Gates identified five areas in which he believes progress is crucial:
- Understanding how Alzheimers develops in the brain
- Improving early detection and diagnosis of the disease
- Increasing the number of approaches to stopping Alzheimers
- Simplifying the path to clinical trial enrollment
- Collecting and using research better

William H. Gates II, a lawyer and philanthropist who was the father of Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, has died at 94. Gates died peacefully Monday at his beach home in Washington state from Alzheimer’s disease, his family announced Tuesday.
In an obituary, the family credited the patriarch with a “deep commitment to social and economic equity,” noting that he was responsible for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s first efforts to improve global health. The family also touched on his advocacy for progressive taxation, especially his unsuccessful efforts to pass a state income tax on the wealthy in Washington.
“My dad’s wisdom, generosity, empathy, and humility had a huge influence on people around the world,” Bill Gates wrote in a tribute.
Born in 1925, Gates Sr. grew up in Bremerton, Washington, where his parents owned a furniture store. During World War II, he joined the Army following his freshman year at the University of Washington and was en route to Japan when it surrendered in 1945.
He served a year in war-torn Tokyo before returning to the United States and resuming his education, his family said. After earning his law degree in 1950, he began working in private practice and as a part-time Bremerton city attorney.
Gates retired from law in 1998 and took on prominent roles with the Gates Foundation, helping launch its work in global health.
Climate Change And Energy
Gates considers climate change and global access to energy to be critical, interrelated issues. He has urged governments and the private sector to invest in research and development to make clean, reliable energy cheaper. Gates envisions that a breakthrough innovation in sustainable energy technology could drive down both greenhouse gas emissions and poverty, and bring economic benefits by stabilizing energy prices. In 2011, he said: “If you gave me the choice between picking the next 10 presidents or ensuring that energy is environmentally friendly and a quarter as costly, I’d pick the energy thing.”
In 2015, he wrote about the challenge of transitioning the world’s energy system from one based primarily on fossil fuels to one based on sustainable energy sources. Global energy transitions have historically taken decades. He wrote, “I believe we can make this transition faster, both because the pace of innovation is accelerating, and because we have never had such an urgent reason to move from one source of energy to another.” This rapid transition, according to Gates, would depend on increased government funding for basic research and financially risky private-sector investment, to enable innovation in diverse areas such as nuclear energy, grid energy storage to facilitate greater use of solar and wind energy, and solar fuels.

A Drop In The Research Bucket
While Gates donation of $50 million is a lot of money, in research terms its relatively small.
The U.S. National Institutes for Health alone spends an estimated $1.4 billion on research for Alzheimers disease and related dementias.
However, Gordon said Gates donation could be an inspiration for others to join and give money.
Its weird, we live in an age where we say Well 50 million dollars, its not that much money, he said. I think he can serve as an example to other people. That there is a need for philanthropic for Alzheimers research.
Dr. Heather Snyder, senior director of medical and scientific operations at the Alzheimers Association, said if you actually look at federal funding for Alzheimers disease research from just 5 or 10 years ago, the donations impact can really be seen.
I mean its only been three or four years that weve been seeing increases in funding at the federal levels, she said. A few years ago we were only at about $450 million dollars. Weve had some big wins from our champions in Washington D.C.
Snyder pointed out that while the current federal funding for Alzheimers research is large, its still dwarfed by federal funding for cancer or cardiovascular disease research.
Those are $6 billion and $2 billion, respectively.
Gordon also said that by giving money to this private fund, scientists can look for research avenues that arent just related to pharmaceutical companies.
Generations Of Alzheimer’s Bond Under 1 Roof
To fast-track treatments for those with Alzheimer’s, Gates designated the remaining $50-million to fund a national patient registry, one that will speed up recruitment for clinical trials, and a groundbreaking international database for research that will help scientists share data, and perhaps collaborate, with one another.
“By looking at this data, we can start to understand, are there multiple syndromes here that are slightly different? Is it different in different races is it different from men than women?” Gates said. “One of the things we’re trying to figure out is, when does the Alzheimer’s really get started? When would you need to treat somebody to completely avoid them getting Alzheimer’s?”
Gates, who at 62, revealed he worries about developing Alzheimer’s like his dad, says his $100 million donation is only the beginning of his mission.
Gates told Shriver he’s putting out a call to everyone, old and young, to help in the fight by donating time and money, participating in clinical trials, and making important lifestyle changes â like regularly exercising and eating a healthy diet â to help reduce their own risks.

Leading Philanthropist Bill Gates Has Announced Today That He Is To Invest In A New Fund Designed To Bring About Improved Diagnosis Of Alzheimers Disease The Most Common Cause Of Dementia
Mr Gates made his first investment into dementia research in November 2017 when he put $50m into the Dementia Discovery Fund , which provides backing for early-stage drug discovery projects around the globe. The DDF was formed through a collaboration of the UK Department of Health, Alzheimers Research UK and several leading pharmaceutical companies.
Todays announcement sees Mr Gates make a further investment into a new fund, Diagnostics Accelerator, run by the Alzheimers Drug Discovery Foundation in the US. The fund will back research aimed at accelerating earlier and better diagnosis of Alzheimers disease in the clinic.

The ability to diagnose diseases like Alzheimers early and accurately remains one of the biggest challenges for our scientists, so this is an encouraging focus on finding solutions. Early diagnosis also helps improve our approach to trialling new treatments by ensuring cohorts comprise people with a clear diagnosis who can truly benefit from therapies.

In addition to running a multi-billion dollar business, Bill and his wife Melinda also manage the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation a philanthropic organization that has been noted to have a $50 billion endowment.
