Does Terry Semel Have Alzheimer’s

Hollywoods Most Famous Nursing Home

The Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA

Approaching the high-security Motion Picture retirement community not far from Old Town Calabasas, drivers navigate a landscape of lush gardens resembling a manicured college campus. The nursing home opened in 1942 with support from the Motion Picture & Television Fund, established in 1921 by such luminaries as Mary Pickford and Charlie Chaplin to assist destitute actors and others in need. Today, the facilities are endowed by such entertainment stalwarts as Jodie Foster and Haim Saban, and include accommodations for independent and assisted living.

But the move stunned family and friends.

It broke the entire family apart, said a close family friend, adding that Semel spent years building his expansive Bel-Air compound, occasionally expressing his desire to grow old and die there.

Im really upset about the situation, said Victor Drai, a producer-turned-nightclub impresario who has known Semel for decades. We were very good friends. I just loved Terry.

Drai found it hard to imagine a plausible explanation for the move given Semels resources, wondering why he wasnt housed in one of his other properties surrounded by 24-hour nurses, security, even a chef to see to his comfort and needs. You put someone in a home when you have no money to take care of them, Drai said. He has all the money in the world.

Four other people close to Semel told The Times that Semel did not want to be in the Woodland Hills facility.

Former Warner Brothers and Yahoo executive, Terry Semel, had been on the top of his game for over two decades as he revolutionized the movie business. But last year, at the age of 75, it became public knowledge how the movie titan’s family were fighting amongst themselves as Terry could no longer handle his own finances or personal business due to Alzheimer’s. His son, Eric Semel, filed a petition for the court to appoint a temporary conservator for his father. Eric claims that his stepmother, Jane, “was in serious breach of her fiduciary duties” after placing Terry in a nursing home two years prior.

Terry, his son claimed, had been reduced to living in a 500-square-foot bedroom at the Motion Picture & Television Fund retirement community in Woodland Hills, against his expressed wish to remain at his home, a 13,000-square-foot Bel-Air mansion. There were also accusations of Jane refusing to allow Terry to leave the facility, not taking him for regular physician visits, and ordering healthcare staff to change or eliminate certain medications. Jane disputes the claims, saying that Terry is not the man he once was. He is sometimes confused and sometimes upset, but those are functions of his disease, not anything that anyone has done to him.

Meditation May Sharpen Memory

Small study finds benefits for older adults

HealthDay Reporter

TUESDAY, May 10, 2016 — A regular;meditation;practice might benefit older adults beginning to notice memory problems, a small pilot study finds.

The study focused on 25 older adults deemed to have mild cognitive impairment — problems with memory and thinking that may, in some cases, progress to;dementia.

Researchers randomly assigned them to either 12 weeks of meditation and other;yoga;practices, or 12 weeks of memory enhancement training — which taught strategies for improving forgetfulness.

In the end, the study found, both groups did a little better on tests of verbal memory — the kind involved in remembering names or lists of words, for example. But the meditation group showed a bigger change, on average, in tests of visual-spatial memory — which is needed for navigating while walking or driving, or trying to recall a location.

The meditators also showed fewer;symptoms of depression;andanxiety.

To Dr. Helen Lavretsky, the senior researcher on the study, that is a key finding.

“The benefits of;yoga;and meditation are diverse,” said Lavretsky, a professor-in-residence in the psychiatry department at the University of California, Los Angeles.

There are several reasons the practices might help seniors with memory issues, Lavretsky said.

One way is by easing their;anxiety;about those problems. But, there may also be more-direct effects on “brain fitness,” she explained.

Boosting Brains Immune Cell Function Improves Alzheimers Symptoms In Mice Study Finds

Former Warner Bros./Yahoo! CEO Terry Semel

Shown here in green are microglia, the brains immune cells, interacting with clumps of protein called amyloid plaques, shown in red, in a mouse model of Alzheimers. In the top row, the microglia surrounding the amyloid plaques show heightened reactivity and shortened extensions or branches. In the bottom row, microglia in mice with elevated TREM2 show more controlled immune response, more branched extensions and reduced plaque.

Scientists have known for about five years that mutations in the gene TREM2 increase a persons risk of developing Alzheimers disease. Now, UCLA researchers have shown in mice that boosting levels of the TREM2 protein could help treat people with Alzheimers. TREM2 makes the brains immune cells more effective at fighting disease and protecting brain cells, they report in the March 7 issue of Neuron.

We showed that boosting TREM2 at least in these mice and if you do it early enough is beneficial, said Dr. X. William Yang, a professor of psychiatry and biobehavioral sciences at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. Having a therapeutic that could increase TREM2 levels or function should really be further explored.

However, when the mice with 5xFAD had genetically elevated levels of TREM2, the disease course changed. The mice had fewer amyloid plaques, and those they did have had shifted toward the less harmful types. The 7-month-old mice performed better on memory tests, with results comparable to normal, healthy animals.

From Queens To Hollywood

Semel grew up in Queens, New York. His father designed womens coats, and his mother worked at a bus company. After an uninspired turn as an accountant, he joined a sales training program at Warner Bros. in 1965. Following a short detour to CBS and Disney, he returned to Warner and rose through the ranks, becoming president and chief operating officer in 1982. In 1994, Semel was named co-chairman alongside Bob Daly.

The Semel-Daly partnership was remarkably successful. They shared an assistant, lived on the same Bel-Air street and often rode to Warners Burbank offices together. Their nearly 20-year reign remains one of the most stable and profitable periods in Warners history; revenue ballooned from $1 billion to $11 billion. They racked up a number of blockbusters including Batman, television hits like ER and a string of Oscar winners, including Driving Miss Daisy.

During his time at Warner, Semel helped introduce novel ideas now considered industry standards, such as renting unused studio space to other filmmakers and making merchandising a core part of financing and marketing. He also helped transform Warner into a major player in television .

Semel was known as daring, creative and elegant a mentor to many. He was also a fierce deal maker. NBCUniversal Vice Chairman Ron Meyer, who has known Semel for decades, called him a very smart, shrewd, tough negotiator. He knew his business as well as anybody.

Last May, Eric Semel, the eldest child and only son of former Warner Bros. chief Terry Semel, filed a petition in Los Angeles County Superior Court to appoint a temporary conservator for his father. Semel had been a lion of Hollywood during his heyday, winning admiration for the way he revolutionized the movie business during two decades at the top and for the finesse with which hed conducted himself while doing so. But by last year Semel, then 75 and suffering the ravages of Alzheimers, had for some time been unable to manage his personal or financial affairs.

Two years earlier, Semels wife, Jane, had put him in a nursing facility. Now Eric was claiming that his stepmother was in serious breach of her fiduciary duties and causing serious harm to Terrys health and safety, potentially rising to elder abuse and neglect.

Eric Semels extraordinary campaign to revoke his stepmothers authority over his fathers care set off a divisive family crisis while opening a window into Terry Semels well-being and treatment, which had been the subject of long-running speculation among friends and associates. How did one of the wealthiest and most powerful men in Hollywood a man with considerable resources and influence, who had given millions to various philanthropic causes and owned homes in Los Angeles, New York City, the Hamptons and London end up in a two-room unit in a home for the aged in the Valley?

5/11 — TMZ has learned the lawyer who handles Britney Spears‘ conservatorship has just been named Semel’s conservator. Adam Streisand repped Terry’s son in court Friday.

Terry Semel, the former Warner Bros. Chairman and Yahoo! CEO … once one of the most powerful people in Hollywood, has been moved from his 13,000 square foot Bel-Air compound and warehoused in a 500 square foot apartment, and his son claims it’s all the doing of Terry’s wife.

Semel suffers from Alzheimer’s and according to new legal docs, obtained by TMZ, Eric Semel says Jane Semel has been heartless, abusing her authority and not properly caring for his father.

Most concerning to Eric … he says Jane has put Terry in the Motion Picture & Television Fund House, which he describes as “a retirement home intended for low-income entertainment industry members in Woodland Hills, CA.”

Eric says Terry and Jane have homes in California, New York and London, and there is no reason “Mr. Semel should not be cared for and reside in a suitable, secured home that is accessible for his physical needs.”

Eric is trying to wrestle power away from Jane and is asking a judge to appoint the lawyer who handles Britney Spears‘ conservatorship to manage his dad’s affairs.
