What Photos And Pictures To Use

MindStart This Is My Life Memory Book: Creating and Using in Dementia Care

When creating a memory book for somebody with Alzheimers or dementia remember their condition. Using extra-large photos of peoples faces will help the person to see the photos better along with making easier recognition of the person in the photo.

You could also use cuttings of pictures from magazines and newspapers.

You could edit the photos before you have them printed by enlarging them on a photo editing software like Photoshop. This will make it easier for the person to recognize the person in the photos.

Try not to put pictures of dead parents in a memory book

If the persons mum or dad or both have died, it may be wise not to put these photos in the memory book. It may upset the person if they have dementia or memory problems because there could be a chance they dont remember the pictures of their parents and you will have to remind them there parents have died. Which can deeply upset the person. They will have to re-live the death of their parents again.

You could also use pictures that also tell a story to help the persons memory. If the person was a policeman during their career, why not show them in their uniform. If they have been on holiday somewhere why not show them on the beach.

Orientation And Daily Schedule

When making a memory book, a person may ask the help of families and friends to gather important information and photos of them with the person with dementia.

Here are some general ideas for the structure:

  • Create a cover page with the persons name and photo: This may help the person to identify it. You can also add emergency contact information, addresses, and phone numbers.
  • Add a table of contents, titles, and page numbers: This can also help to structure the book.
  • Use only one picture per pageand keep the other page blank: This can help the person concentrate on the image and not become overwhelmed.
  • Captions can help provide some context to the photos: Keep the captions objective to allow the person to make meaning of the pictures themselves. Be sure to make it short and sweet and use a font size that is large enough for the person to easily read.

Memory Books Are Meaningful & Functional

I once had a patient who had a stroke at 99 years old. After she was discharged home, her daughter noticed that shed stopped talkingand that her memory seemed off.

Two months post-stroke, I was called in for an evaluation. After assessing the patient, I recommended a Memory Book.

Her daughter dug out old photo albums and we organized pictures into a personalized book, adding captions to spark even more memories. When presented with the book, her mother lit up and began regaling us with stories of her youth. The daughter thanked me through tears of joy. All it took was a simple Memory Book to ignite her mothers memories and help them to reconnect.

Why Create A Digital Memory Book

First, lets talk about why you might make your memory book digital rather than having print copies. Its hard to deny the appeal of printed photos, and having scrapbooks to flip through is a great way to rekindle some nostalgia for the past.
