Despite being written off by Fact checkers multiple times, this test continues to exist in social media, forums and YouTube videos. It is a human face created by placing photos of various animals. The claim is that if one manages to find the image of the camel among all other animals, then he can be assured of not having Alzheimer disease. We mark this as False.

The Claim

The claim goes with the image shown below. It is posed as a test to check if one has Alzheimer disease. Doctors say those who find the camel will be far from developing Alzheimer.

Dementia Central has a list of scientifically approved tests for Alzeimers disease listed here. Finding the camel is not one of them.

We asked Neurologists and Neuro-psychologists on the topic.

Dr. Pawan Raj, Associate Professor & Consultant Neurologistat Father Muller Medical College says, No it is not a valid test for diagnosing Alzheimers disease.

The Memory Of Music Is Damaged In Alzheimers Patients

Social media users have been sharing an image online that shows a composition of animals resembling a face and claiming that spotting the camel in the image means the viewer will not develop Alzheimers for a long time. There is no evidence to support this and the Alzheimers Association confirmed it isnt a verified way to test a patient. The implications of the posts – that everyone will develop Alzheimers eventually and that if you dont spot the camel you will develop Alzheimers soon – are also false.

Examples can be seen here and here .

One posts caption here reads: Doctors say if you can find the camel, you are way away from getting Alzheimers.

The posts do not cite a source or give any information about the doctors mentioned.

Some versions of this image here and here , do not include the camel and instead ask the user to count how many animals are visible. In the versions which do feature the camel, which is very small, it is visible on the right side by the horses rear leg.

Reuters was not able to find the original creator of the image. A search on TinEye, an image search and recognition tool, revealed that it has been circulating since at least February 2008 here .

The image is reminiscent of the artwork of Giuseppe Arcimboldo, who created portraits by composing different animals and objects here .

Certain medications can also affect memory. A lack of sleep and an impaired thyroid function can negatively affect memory. Some of these conditions can also lead to a decreased ability to remember events. In addition to these, natural aging can affect brain function, and may lead to a slowdown in memory. Although this symptom does not necessarily mean that youre losing your memory, it could indicate a problem with your cognitive ability. If you are suffering from either, a medical evaluation is necessary to determine if youre suffering from memory loss. Where Is the Camel Alzheimers

In addition to aging, medications can affect memory. Certain antidepressants, anxiety medications, and sleep disorders can all affect memory. A persons mental health can also contribute to memory problems. In some cases, a persons mental state may be affected by the medication they are taking. Some untreated medical conditions can lead to deterioration of the brain and affect the ability to learn and remember. It is also important to see a medical professional if your symptoms persist even after youve stopped taking certain medications.

Why Some Foods Induce Memory Loss

The brain needs its own brand of fuel. It requires healthy fats, fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and adequate vitamins and minerals. Consuming too little of these foods and too many complex carbohydrates, processed foods and sugar stimulates the production of toxins in the body. Those toxins can lead to inflammation, the build-up of plaques in the brain and, as a result, impaired cognitive function.

These effects apply to people of all ages, not just seniors.

The Alzheimers Camel Test:

ALZHEIMER’S TEST ~ FIND THE CAMEL IN THE PICTURE PUZZLE

The Alzheimers camel test is the common name for a doctored image showing a face made of various animals. The original image did not even include the camel, but it was later photoshopped in. The image was shared with the claim that those who could spot the camel were at a lower risk for Alzheimers and those who couldnt have a greater chance to develop the disease.

Try and spot the camel yourself. If you cannot, dont worry, you have no reason to panic. There is no evidence to support claims that your ability or inability to spot a camel in the image has any link to your chances of developing Alzheimers. When claims about the image were brought before neurologists it was confirmed that the image was a hoax. Images like this are typically spread with the sole purpose of spreading fear and should be ignored. There are legitimate self-administered methods to identify the risk of developing cognitive diseases, but none are as simple as the Alzheimers camel test.

There Are Supplements That Can Help Prevent Alzheimers

There have yet to be any studies proving the ability of vitamins, herbal products, or medications to prevent the development of Alzheimers disease, says Dr. Kumar Dharmarajan, chief scientific officer at Clover Health. However, a healthy lifestyle including frequent physical activity, heart-healthy diets, and control of chronic conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes could help reduce the likelihood, he says. While there is no conclusive evidence directly linking these lifestyle changes to preventing Alzheimers, they have been shown in some studies to promote increased brain health, which could ultimately play a key role in thwarting the disease.

Camels Give President Obama’s Alzheimer’s Plan A Lift

New research in The FASEB Journal suggests that serum from animals such as camels, llamas, and alpacas could enhance brain imaging and help drugs pass through the blood-brain barrier

Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology

Bethesda, MDPresident Obama’s national plan to fight Alzheimer’s disease just got a lift thanks to a team of international researchers whose recent discovery may lead to enhanced imaging of and improved drug delivery to the brain. A research report appearing in The FASEB Journal, describes an entirely new class of antibody discovered in camelids that is able to cross the blood-brain barrier, diffuse into brain tissue, and reach specific targets. Having such antibodies, which are naturally available, may be part of a “game changer” in the outcomes for people with brain diseases that are poorly diagnosed and treated, at best, using today’s tools.

“Camels may be most famous for helping people travel to the outermost reaches of the desert, but soon they could be also known for helping us reach the innermost parts of our brains,” said Gerald Weissmann, M.D., Editor-in-Chief of The FASEB Journal. “It appears that these prized animals are far more capable of helping get to hard-to-reach places than we ever could have imagined.”

Alzheimers Only Affects The Elderly

Alzheimers doesnt just affect the elderly. One myth that I commonly hear about Alzheimers is that the condition solely affects the elderly population, says Nesochi Okeke-Igbokwe, MD, physician and health and wellness expert. Though we typically hear about the disease occurring more often in older people, there is a small subset of those affected by early-onset Alzheimers who may manifest symptoms as early as their 30s and 40s. It is important to note that early-onset Alzheimers is less common and genetics may sometimes play a role in increasing the risk for the condition.

Alzheimers Can Only Be Treated After A Diagnosis

ALZHEIMER

Doctors used to believe that you couldnt do anything about Alzheimers until symptoms appeared. In the past few years, theres been a shift in the thinking for many of us who study dementia. Weve come to the conclusion that the best time to treat Alzheimers disease is before the earliest symptoms surface, says Dr. Kosik. This shift has been brought on by new technology that allows us to peer inside the human brain we now know that the Alzheimers plaques begin to proliferate 10 or even 20 years before the first Alzheimers symptoms become noticeable.
