His Lifelong Battle With Booze
In the handful of years prior to his dementia claim, David Cassidy made multiple headlines for his ongoing battle with alcohol. According to People, he was arrested for DUI in 2010, then again in 2013 and 2014. Shorly after his third DUI arrested, Cassidy who had been in and out of rehab confessed to being an alcoholic.
If I take another drink, Im going to die, physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually. Im dead, Cassidy told CNNs Piers Morgan in March 2014. You know, they say its a slippery slope Its not a slippery slope. Its from 12:00 to 6:00 on the clock and the whole face is ice. One sip, one drink, because there is no such a thing, not to an alcoholic. You have one and youre youre done. Id be done.
Unfortunately, it seems Cassidy never kicked the habit. In the aforementioned A& E documentary promo, Cassidy admits the dementia lie was all a ruse. The fact is that I lied about my drinking, he says in the film. I did this to myself to cover up the sadness and the emptiness.

David Cassidy Says He Never Had Dementia Was Still Drinking Before His Death
In a new documentary set to air on A& E next week, singer/actor David Cassidy admits that he was abusing alcohol until the last months of his life, and never had dementia, as was previously reported last year before he died.
People revealed that the scene from David Cassidy: the Last Session, which airs June 11, was filmed two months before the Partridge Family star died of organ failure in November at age 67.
Cassidy struggled with alcohol abuse throughout his life and racked up three DUI arrests in five years. After a stint in rehab in 2014, he told his loved ones that he had stopped drinking, which the documentary reveals to be untrue.
In the clip, Cassidy calls the documentary’s producers after falling ill in a recording studio and tells them he had liver disease, not dementia.
I have a liver disease, Cassidy told producer Saralena Weinfield in the recorded conversation. There is no sign of me having dementia at this stage of my life. It was complete alcohol poisoning.
The fact is that I lied about my drinking, he continued. I did this to myself to cover up the sadness and the emptiness.
The documentary follows Cassidy as he records a new album while dealing with health and memory problems.
I think it will strike a chord with people, producer John Marks told People. He wanted to share this very private part of his life and to be honest once and for all. And I think he succeeded in doing that.”
Cut Her Off Completely
According to the documents, which were filed in Floridas Broward County Circuit Court, The Partridge Family star the same one who passed away after multiple organ failures at the relatively young age of 67 and had dealt with dementia and alcoholism publicly cut his only daughter out of his will. Many were stunned to hear David only wanted his son Beau to receive whatever was left of his fortune, but this was his last will and testament since 2004, and it had to be honored.

LOS ANGELES David Cassidy says he was still drinking in the last years of his life and he did not have dementia.
People magazine reported Wednesday the former teen idol called producers of an A& E documentary David Cassidy: the Last Session after he fell ill and told them he had liver disease. In the recorded conversation, Cassidy said there was no sign of dementia and it was complete alcohol poisoning.
The former Partridge Family star says he had lied by telling friends and family he had stopped drinking.
There is no sign of dementia of me having dementia at this stage of my life, Cassidy says on the audio recording. An emotional Cassidy goes on to to say I did it to myself. I did it to myself to cover up the sadness. And the emptiness.

In a documentary shot weeks before his death from liver and kidney failure in November at age 67, singer David Cassidy admits that the dementia he suffered last year was temporary and not progressive, and had been triggered by the alcoholism he had publicly denied.
I just met with the doctor, and . . . I have a liver disease, Cassidy says in an audio recording with Saralena Weinfield, supervising producer of the A& E special David Cassidy: The Final Session, airing Monday. My life has changed dramatically. The first few days I was unconscious and near death, he continues in the undated excerpt released Wednesday. The last week or so my memorys come back. Thats such a blessing, he goes on. That means Im cognizant of my surroundings. That Im alive and its daytime and I know what day of the week it is!
He adds, There is no sign of me having dementia at this stage of my life. It was complete alcohol poisoning. And the fact is, I lied about my drinking.
The issue was more complicated, he concedes in Wednesdays audio excerpt. The head doctor at the hospital, she said, I believe that your dementia was directly related to your alcoholism, tying the two together, he said, adding, I did it to myself, man. I did it to myself to cover up the sadness. And the emptiness.

In David Cassidys heyday, he was as big a celebrity as one could become. He once told Entertainment Weekly that his fanzine publisher received up to 25,000 letters from adoring fans per day. Former Partridge Family Star David Cassidy Reveals He Has Dementia
Two years after getting pretty much sober, David Cassidy was performing at The Canyon Club in Agoura, California, on February 18 when he forgot the lyrics to his hit songs and rumors began to spread that he had fallen off the wagon.
It was that incident that was the impetus for the former Partridge Family star to reveal that in 2015 he had been diagnosed with the early stages of dementia.
On todays Dr. Phil, the 70s teen heartthrob tells TVs top doc that his first symptoms were revealed when friends or family members ask you, Remember, I just told you this two days ago? and theres no memory of it thats when I began to be very concerned.
Cassidys fear of a dementia diagnosis actually began years earlier when he watched his mothers mind slowly being lost to the disease. He was so affected that he filmed a public service announcement for Alzheimers Disease in 2011.
Also on todays episode of Dr. Phil, Cassidy discusses the status of his current relationship with his family and his fear of being a burden to them, as well as whether or not he believes his past alcoholism contributed to his condition.
Cassidy, who has been divorced three times, says he doesnt have a relationship with eldest daughter Katie, who has starred on Melrose Place and Arrow, but he is close to his son Beau, 26.
I can still sit in my living room with my guitar and play like I did when I was 17.
David Cassidys Final Days
During a recorded telephone conversation after an emergency hospital stay, Cassidy told a producer that he had liver disease and there was never any evidence he had dementia. He said:
There is no sign of me having dementia at this stage of my life. It was complete alcohol poisoning. The fact is, I lied about my drinking.
Over the last several years before his death, the actor had struggled with alcohol abuse and was arrested for drunken drinking three times between 2010 and 2014.
The 2014 arrest resulted in him going to rehab as it was a part of his sentencing. The “Cherish” singer told producers the drinking was an attempt to cover up his “emptiness” and “sadness.”
At the time, his son Beau released a statement about the documentary. He stated that the Cassidy family was not affiliated with the documentary and said:
We, the Cassidy family, were not affiliated with the A& E documentary. All we are interested in is maintaining the legacy of the icon he was.
The documentary chronicled Cassidy’s struggles and his attempt to make a comeback and cope with the disease. It was scheduled to be broadcast in June 2018 on A& E.
Cassidy’s two children and his half-brothers survived him. Although he is gone, his legacy continues in his work and children, who followed in his acting and musical footsteps.
