Marla Adams Interview – The Young and the Restless – 45th Annual Daytime Emmys Red Carpet
  • Yes. Marla Adams is alive but her character of Dina is dying on The Young and the Restless

The report mentioned that the show has earned critical acclaim for the storyline that revolved around Dinas health. The role also earned her a Daytime Emmy nomination in the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series category. In an earlier interview to Soap Opera Digest, Marla Adams had talked about her role and how she was hesitant to take on such storyline as her character was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. She had said, Oh, that was scary because I had never even been exposed to anything like that before. Still, she was glad that she was able to add more depth to Dina that she could not add in the early years of the character.

Where Is Marla Adams From

Adams was born in a well-to-do family in New Jersey. She was raised in her hometown, New Jersey. She did her schooling at a local school. Further information about her siblings and family is not disclosed. Growing up, she became very interested in doing acting. So, she took many acting classes and also was on the school’s theatre team.

Then, she attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. After completion of her studies, she moved to Los Angels to pursue her career in acting. She also made her appearance in the 1958 production of The Visit at the Morosco Theatre with Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne.

How Did Marla Adams Feel About This Storyline

Adams and the show earned critical acclaim for the storyline about Dinas health. In 2018, she received Daytime Emmy nomination in the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series category.

Back in an interview in 2018 with Soap Opera Digest, Adams spoke about some of her hesitations in taking on the storyline.

Oh, that was scary because I had never even been exposed to anything like that before, she said. When I first came on as Dina, she had returned to her family after years of all her cavorting around Paris and her kids hated her. It was a disaster for her. I remember when Bill Bell told me, This is one of the most important storylines weve ever done. Now, doing this Alzheimers thing just blows me away. Its a great comfort that the writing is showing what is truthful. Thanks to the Alzheimers Association that Mal Young is working with closely, its very authentic and honest writing.

In an interview with TV Insider, Beth Maitland, who plays Traci Abbott, spoke about Adams leaving the show and her storied career.

Marla is pretty signature for creating the first rich bitch on daytime, she said. Belle was the first wealthy, dominating villainess. Marla made that a signature thing. Because Marla had played Natalie Woods best friend in Splendor in the Grass, and they had stayed friends, R.J. had her in an episode of Hart to Hart. She was one of three beautiful, elegant women dressed all in white. At the time, I was working as a casting assistant on that show. Marla and I have talked many times about that connection between us before we went on to play mother and daughter on Y& R.

When Dina passed away, viewers saw her ascending to heaven and being welcomed by her first husband, John Abbott . For Adams, this moment was a highlight of her acting career. She explained:

It was heart-wrenching for me. In the story, Dina died when she went outside and to the front door of the Abbott home. They did not tell me before-hand, and thats why it was so wonderful. I hope they came in for a closeup of that because I had no makeup on, it was beautiful, and then, Dina said, ‘Oh, John.’ Ive done everything from movies, to daytime, to nighttime, to Broadway, but that was the iconic moment for me, to do this gig with wonderful, wonderful actors and friends, and to do this particular storyline.

She added:

As an actress, this was the most important role of my life, and to have her final moments spread out in one day really is because of all of the fans who have been writing in and wanting to see Dina again.

Y& R has released a nice promo, featuring her early episodes.

I want to make it clear how much shell be missed on set. Butyou never know. People on our show have come back as someones conscience or an angel. So, we dont know for sure that its over. But shell be missed tremendously. Im glad that were still friends and well still see each other for socially-distant lunch dates.

This is a four-year story coming to a close. We hope very much that this has been an accurate telling of the devastation of this disease. Weve shown the gift of caring for our parents when they need us. We hope that was accurately depicted, as well.

Dina Is A Lovable Handful In Genoa City

There is nothing funny about someone dying from Alzheimer’s disease but Mal Young is writing Dina’s behavior with dignity and some humor.

She has run off caregivers and told Nikki and Hilary both what she thinks of them. In her lucid moments, Ms. Mergeron is a spitfire. She speaks her mind without bitting her tongue and fans love her. The flip side is that her actions are now involving others in Genoa City and have at times been dangerous. Jack does not want his mother to be put in a facility but she is becoming a handful.

On Thursday, Dina thought Jack was his father John and she turned out to be the one who made off with little Christian because she thought he was a very young Jack. The scene where Jack had to take the child from her arms and give him back to his father was heart-wrenching. This is, however, the second time Ms. Mergeron has affected Nick Newman’s life. The first was when she accidentally burned down his club.

Although he has compassion for Dina’s plight the situation with Christian may cause the volatile Mr. Newman to insist that she be confined somewhere. Jack will be in turmoil as he tries to decide the best course of action for his mother, and things will only get worse now that Graham has returned to Genoa City.
