A new fan theory suggests that Meredith Grey has Alzheimers disease. With the debilitating disease, symptoms usually develop slowly and worsen over time, becoming severe enough to interfere with everyday tasks. Fans will remember that its the disease that led to the death of Ellis Grey , Merediths mother, in season 3 and that Meredith tested positive for several genetic markers for Alzheimers in season 9.
In fact, Alzheimers was first introduced to the show in the pilot episode, when Merediths voiceover narration was revealed to be a story she was telling her mother at an assisted living facility.
So what if Merediths subsequent voiceovers were stories she tells her three children sometime in the future? Perhaps some of her memories from over the years were altered by dementia, mixing fact with fiction.

Meredith Rigs A Clinical Trial
Speaking of illegal AND immoral, Meredith pulls a stunt of her own back in season seven. Working with Derek on an Alzheimers trial, the two do a blind testing that would allow some patients to get the real meds, while the others get a placebo. Its at this same time that Dr. Webbers wife, Adele, is grappling with rapidly advancing Alzheimers, and Meredith is worried Adele might get the placebo instead of the medicine. So worried, in fact, that she tampers with Adeles dose to make sure she gets the medicine. Alex finds out and narcs on her, but things work out in the end as they tend to do for the doctors on Greys.
Meredith would be so fired if she really did this. She might not even be able to step foot in a hospital if she rigged a national trial. Shed be disgraced and run out of the medical community. Forever.
Why Do Meredith And Derek Break Up
After briefly pushing her away, Andrew apologized, and he eventually became the first person Meredith said “I love you” to since Derek. However, his fears over not being “enough” for a surgical legend kept cropping up throughout their cases and through Meredith’s insurance fraud case, which ultimately led to a breakup.

Hospital Fire And Feelings For Jackson
Maggie bonded with Jackson after her mother’s death. They frequently talked at work and they were together when the explosion caused a fire at the hospital. Jackson rushed off to go find Stephanie, which worried Maggie. She later confronted him about it in front of April, who later pointed out that she felt like Maggie liked Jackson and that he liked her back, which she recognized. Maggie was unsure how she felt about that as she hadn’t thought about Jackson in that way until April suggested it.
Awkwardness ensued in her talks with Jackson as she was constantly walking on eggshells in order not to give him signals. He picked up on her weird behavior and she later came clean about what had transpired between her and April. While initially brushing it off, it also made Jackson look at Maggie in another way. Both were in for a cold shower when Catherine, after a family dinner with Richard and Jackson that Maggie attended, referred to Maggie as Jackson’s sister.
Eventually, they did start dating. Their relationship progressed, and Maggie became more integrated into Jackson’s family. They soon exchanged ‘I love you’s’ and, months later, decided to move in together. Maggie was able to help Jackson through Catherine’s tumor surgery, as Maggie had been through a similar situation with her own mother’s illness.

Why Did George Omalley Leave Greys
The character was created by series producer Shonda Rhimes, and was portrayed by actor T. R. Knight from 2005 to 2009. The actor stated the reason for his departure was due to a breakdown in communication with Rhimes, his characters lack of screen-time, as well as his decision to come out as gay.

Meredith Is A Ticking Time Bomb
Lets go back to season nine, when Meredith asks Bailey to test for her susceptibility to Alzheimers. Merediths results come back positive for more than one of the genetic markers for Alzheimers disease, and Id argue that creator Shonda Rhimes planted this seed then. Meredith is practically doomed to get the disease at some point before the end of the series. Its the ultimate heartbreak and a poetic full-circle moment for the character as she follows in the footsteps of her brilliant mother. When you keep in mind that this has been hanging over Merediths head for about six seasons, you have to realize it gets more and more likely as each one comes and goes.
Thats why its important to establish that Meredith has this genetic predisposition to the disease. It means that shes almost undoubtedly going to get it in her lifetime. But the fact that she already tests positive for some of the genetic markers means it could happen sooner rather than later. Thats how the show establishes that her Alzheimers will be early onset and that shell likely get it while shes still young .

Dianes Cancer And Death
Her mother came to the hospital to visit Maggie and see Jackson to get rid of a rash, which turned out to be inflammatory breast cancer. Diane and Jackson were gonna tell Maggie before Diane left, but they got into a fight and never got to talk about the cancer. A few months later, when Diane returned to have surgery, Maggie kept thinking that her mother was getting breast implants and failed to understand why continuously trying to talk her mother out of it. When Diane later told Maggie the truth about her breast cancer, Maggie immediately started looking at her charts. Over the next few months, Maggie helped her mom through everything and stated her opinion about what she should do, which her mother followed. After Maggie butted heads with Meredith, Diane fired her from her mothers case. Maggie found a clinical trial and signed her mom up for it, although the trial did more harm than good.
After she stated that she wasnt ready for her mom to go, Meredith told her to listen to her mom and record her voice in her mind. The next day, Maggie was talking to her mom and painting her nails. Diane gave her advice including to have some fun in her life and to be a little lazy or slutty and to make a mistake. When Maggie went to open a window, she came back to find that her mom had died. Later on, she was seen hugging her moms lifeless body with Meredith and Amelia in the room. Her dad came in and she hugged him.

While you are pretty sure that you want her to succeed and be happy, you have to admit that you dont 100 percent love her.
Meredith Grey is definitely not an easy character to like and thats basically the entire point. The protagonist of Greys Anatomy has definitely gone through a lot in her life and theres a reason why her nickname is dark and twisty. She says what she thinks, she doesnt seem to have a lot of feelings , and she acts like she doesnt need anyone but herself. In the almost 13 whole seasons that youve been watching Meredith and her fellow doctors, you have rarely seen her open up or show a lot of emotion. Beginning Relationship With Derek Shepherd
After having a one-night stand with Derek without knowing that he was her boss, she and Derek began dating, initially discreetly. But soon Bailey, Merediths resident, caught her and Derek together and made it her mission to make Merediths life at work as miserable as possible, as she was involved with her boss, who was also Baileys boss. Meredith soon learned that Derek was still married when his wife, Addison, came to Seattle to get Derek back. At first, Meredith was angry with Derek for not telling her, but she later admitted to still loving him and begged him to pick me, choose me, love me. When Addison handed him the divorce papers to end their relationship officially, Derek remained hesitant and soon after decided to stay with Addison, much to Merediths dismay. Although the two constantly flirted and Derek still hinted at having feelings for her, they both agreed to remain friends, and Addison, too, attempted to be friends with Meredith.
On the night of the Seattle Grace Hospital Prom, Derek went with Addison, while Meredith went with Finn. The two soon after met with each other in an exam room where Derek confessed that he still loved her and they had sex. Addison discovered Merediths underwear in Dereks pocket and the two finally agreed to divorce. Meredith, however, was still dating Finn and issued a contest between the two boys to see which she would settle with. She ultimately chose Derek and they reconciled.

Couples and families build an ever-growing storehouse of shared experiences and memories over time, and these elements of shared reality become some of the most valued treasures in the relationship. A loss of shared sense of reality is nuanced and an example of an ambiguous loss. It can occur during an every day conversation when it becomes suddenly clear that the person with dementia does not remember or understand whats being discussed. A loss of shared reality resonates in moments when family members want to reach out and soothe their loved one, but words are not available that capture the experience and connect them. It is difficult for family members to describe exactly what has been lost, yet they have a sense of deep grief that something essential cannot be retrieved.

What Tests Are Available
Routine testing is currently available on the NHS for mutations in several genes that cause dementia.
They are the Huntingtons disease gene , the three familial Alzheimers disease genes , and several frontotemporal dementia genes . These tests are only offered in very specific circumstances and with proper counselling.
Routine testing for risk genes like APOE is not available on the NHS and is not generally recommended.

Hospital Merger And Richards Drinking
During the start of the merger with Mercy West Medical Center, Meredith was hospitalized from having donated a portion of her liver to her father, Thatcher Grey, since he was unable to be placed on the transplant list due to his alcoholism. Richards drinking escalated again, causing him to make an error during surgery which almost killed a patient, until Dr. Bailey stepped in, fixing the problem and scheduling weekly followups with the patient to ensure he had no lasting effects. Richards alcoholism led him to do one-on-one teaching sessions where he showed Meredith various surgical techniques and she discovered his drinking again. She kept this from Derek, but he became very angry with Meredith and made her tell him what was going on. When Derek found out about the drinking, he reported Richard to the board, forcing him to either step down from surgery and go to rehab or retire. When he chose rehab, Derek was named the interim Chief of Surgery.

Hiring A Matchmaker And Thatchers Illness
Meredith starts treating matchmaker Cece.
At Jo and Alexs wedding, Andrew kissed Meredith while drunk, which he immediately apologized for. While she dismissed at as no big deal, the kiss led to her having sex dreams about the majority of men in her life, such as Andrew, Jackson, and Tom. Soon after, she started treating Cece Colvin, a professional matchmaker, who picked up on Merediths desire to be kissed, even though Meredith dismissed the observation. She threw her hat in the ring for the recent job opening for interim Chief to have extra work to distract her from her desires. Cece had to be put on dialysis awaiting her kidney transplant. Throughout the set-up, she pointed out that theres no cap on happiness and that love doesnt just come walking through the door. After the surgery, Meredith briefly met Atticus Lincoln but dismissed him at his attempt to introduce himself. At night in bed, a curious Meredith googled Ceces services but opted against using them.
Andy makes Meredith realize there are positive things to take away from her date.
At the hospital, she shared her experience with Andy Herrera, who made her see that she now knew there still were great men out there and that she managed to dodge this particular slow-moving bullet because he revealed his opinion on single mothers before the relationship could have dragged on for too long.
