For many years, Alzheimers disease research was completely stifled by a lack of funding. Pharmaceutical companies were too wary of past failures to fund any new drug development. The drug pipeline was coming up dry, and researchers werent encouraged to think big or bold.

Cure Alzheimers Fund has changed that.

We are a 501 nonprofit organization founded in 2004 by three families frustrated by the slow pace of research. Leveraging their experience in venture capital and corporate start-ups, our founders came together to build a new Alzheimers research fund designed to dramatically accelerate research, make bold bets, and focus exclusively on finding a cure.

Since its founding, CureAlz has contributed more than $145,000,000 to research, and its funded initiatives have been responsible for several key breakthroughs

including a potential treatment recently selected by the National Institutes of Health for its elite Blueprint drug discovery program, and the ground-breaking Alzheimers in a Dish study, which promises to greatly accelerate drug testing and was reported by The New York Times as a giant step forward.

Our Research Leadership Group is an all-star team of scientists working at premier research institutions across the country, regularly conferring with one another on the progress and impediments in their research and constantly sharing their data.

Alzheimer’s Research & Prevention Foundation

Alzheimers Research and Prevention Foundation is committed to the goal of preventing Alzheimer’s disease through research, education, and memory screenings. It was established in 1993.

As opposed to limiting their focus to medication, ARPF strongly emphasizes holistic and integrative medicine. Their education consists of informing communities and professionals about strategies for brain health today as well as dementia prevention for the future.

The ARPF four “pillars of prevention” include:

Another way to “give back” is by participating in clinical trials.

Research on Alzheimer’s disease and other kinds of dementia is ongoing, but volunteers are always needed.

In particular, there has been an under-representation of minorities in research study participants, yet these populations have a higher risk of dementia. Cognitively intact volunteers are also needed for certain trials as well.

Participating in clinical trials is important so that we can learn how effective new medications and treatment approaches might be as well as continue to deepen our understanding of what truly causes Alzheimer’s and related dementias to develop.

Impaired Judgement And Decision

Individuals with Alzheimers disease fall victim to scams because they have impaired judgment and decision-making. Making financial decisions requires the coordinated function of many brain systems in order to retrieve prior information from memory, incorporate new information into memory, keep that information in mind, and analyze it. Individuals with Alzheimers disease have trouble with the brain systems involved in all of these functions.

It is this difficulty with decision-making and judgment that leads to the next two biggest financial problems in Alzheimers disease. The first is donating too much money to legitimate causes, and the second is making poor financial investments.
