Can You Get Rid Of Alzheimer’s

The Embarrassing Reason I Wrote This Post

How to Reverse Dementia and Alzheimer’s

All too frequently, I meet a family who has been dealing with dementia for years but doesnt know what to expect or how to deal with whats going on. Im embarrassed to say that until the past week or so, my education efforts have been limited to pointing people to the Alzheimers Association.

Ive had many of these resources in my notes or on my computer for years, and Ive intended to make a more comprehensive handout for my patients. I never seemed to find the time. Now that other people are reading my blog and downloading my handouts, its motivated me to get my act together and to create something useful.

Ive organized the links to allow you to quickly find what you are looking for. Here are the major categories:

Q So Far Your Experiments Were Done In A Petri Dish Using Tau From Humans And From Mouse Models Of Alzheimers Disease Whats Next

KF: The experiments published in this paper were done in a petri dish however, this study was a little backwards from what you might consider the normal progression. We have actually already done the in vivo study that found that these antibodies effectively reduce pathology in animals that are genetically prone to develop pathology. This work was really focused on how they work to guide development of future treatments. We are now using this knowledge to screen additional antibodies to find any that may be more effective or may work via a different mechanism.

Just An Hours Worth Of Stimulation Was Enough To Activate The Microglia And Bring About A Notable Reduction In The Amyloid Plaques

Optogenetic stimulation which requires genetic modification and surgery is not the kind of treatment that could be easily applied to humans, though. So Tsai next examined whether some less invasive forms of brainwave entrainment could have similar benefits.

In one experiment, the team bathed the mice in a light, flickering at exactly 40Hz for an hour each day in others, they played the mice rapidly clicking sounds at this frequency.

In each case, the idea was that neurons in the visual and auditory systems would begin to fire in sync with sights and sounds, triggering waves of activity that would spread through the brain. And thats exactly what they saw. As hoped, the boosted gamma waves were also accompanied with the increased activity of those care-taking microglia cells, along with reduced levels of the toxic amyloid plaques.

Flickering lights and clicking sounds can tune the brain so that is produces certain frequencies of brainwave

Importantly, these differences could also be seen in measures of the mices behaviour. The mice receiving the stimulation found it easier to learn their way around a maze, while the others became more forgetful as they got older.

Stimulating the neurons in the brains of mice at a specific frequency reduced the presence of amyloid plaques associated with Alzheimer’s Disease

Improve Your Lifestyle For Alzheimers Prevention

Healthy habits may help ward off Alzheimer’s. Consider the following steps to help prevent Alzheimers.

Exercise. “The most convincing evidence is that physical exercise helps prevent the development of Alzheimer’s or slow the progression in people who have symptoms,” says Dr. Marshall. “The recommendation is 30 minutes of moderately vigorous aerobic exercise, three to four days per week.”

Eat a Mediterranean diet. “This has been shown to help thwart Alzheimer’s or slow its progression. A recent study showed that even partial adherence to such a diet is better than nothing, which is relevant to people who may find it difficult to fully adhere to a new diet,” says Dr. Marshall. The diet includes fresh vegetables and fruits whole grains olive oil nuts legumes fish moderate amounts of poultry, eggs, and dairy moderate amounts of red wine and red meat only sparingly.

Get enough sleep. “Growing evidence suggests that improved sleep can help prevent Alzheimer’s and is linked to greater amyloid clearance from the brain,” says Dr. Marshall. Aim for seven to eight hours per night.

Use Your Sentence To Remind Them Better

When you describe the thing then make sure you use lower tone and speak slowly. You just have to use simple and short sentences. Make sure you break your sentence before reminding them. Better to take a little pause so the people get a proper time to think and react. So only use simple word and short sentence to make it easier. And break every long incident into small steps.

For instance, were going to purchase sweets from your favorite shop Sugar spice then we will park our car near the street from the school then we will see movie at the mall. This might be confusing and go over the head. So you can change it like first we are going sugar & spice to buy sweets. Take a pause to give them a moment to process before proceeding. Then we will go to the park. Take a little pause. Then we will go to movie and see a movie.

Some Questions Remain Unanswered

The study couldn’t determine the benefits or consequences of how the coffee was prepared nor it was able to differentiate between caffeinated and de-caffeinated coffee.

Also, the researchers are yet to identify exactly which constituents of coffee are responsible for the positive effects on brain health.

In animal study, caffeine has been found to be effective in partially preventing memory impairment. But various studies have also shown that other coffee components such as cafestol, kahweol and Eicosanoyl-5-hydroxytryptamide affect cognitive impairment in animals. The ECU also pointed out that caffeine may not be the sole contributor to potentially delaying the onset of Alzheimer’s disease.

The study results were published in Frontiers of Ageing Neuroscience.

Medical Treatment For Dysphagia

Medications Prescription oral medications or corticosteroids are sometimes used for dysphagia associated with GERD. Medications can also be used to relax the esophagus and reduce discomfort for dysphagia caused by esophageal spasms.

Surgery Surgery may clear the esophageal path for cases of esophageal tumor, pharyngeal diverticula , or achalasia.

Tube Feeding If swallowing safely and smoothly does not become possible, or if the swallow function does not support nutrition or hydration enough, tube feeding may be needed.

Esophageal DilationEsophageal dilation is for people with a tight esophageal sphincter. Your doctor may use an endoscope with a special balloon attached to gently stretch and expand the width of your esophagus or pass a flexible tube or tubes to stretch the esophagus.

What Is Alzheimer’s Disease

Alzheimers disease is a brain disorder that cannot be stopped or reversed. The disease severely affects memory, thinking, learning and organizing skills and eventually affects a persons ability to carry out simple daily activities. Alzheimers disease is not a normal part of the aging process.

Alzheimers is a disease whose symptoms worsen over time. In fact, scientists believe the disease process may go on for 10 years or longer before the first symptoms of Alzheimers disease appear.

When memory problems do begin to be noticeable, they are often identified as mild cognitive impairment . At this stage, intellectual function is affected but the ability to function and live independently remain intact as the brain compensates for disease-related changes.

In some people, MCI can hold steady at this stage. However, people with MCI are at high risk for progressing to dementia. Alzheimers disease is the most common form of dementia. With dementia, in contrast to MCI, daily function is affected.

As dementia due to Alzheimers disease progresses to late stages, affected individuals cannot carry on a conversation, recognize family and friends, or care for themselves.

Treatment For Mild To Moderate Alzheimers

Get rid of difficult dementia behaviors [what you need to know]

Treating the symptoms of Alzheimers can provide people with comfort, dignity, and independence for a longer period of time and can encourage and assist their caregivers as well. Galantamine, rivastigmine, and donepezil are cholinesterase inhibitors that are prescribed for mild to moderate Alzheimers symptoms. These drugs may help reduce or control some cognitive and behavioral symptoms.

Scientists do not yet fully understand how cholinesterase inhibitors work to treat Alzheimers disease, but research indicates that they prevent the breakdown of acetylcholine, a brain chemical believed to be important for memory and thinking. As Alzheimers progresses, the brain produces less and less acetylcholine, so these medicines may eventually lose their effect. Because cholinesterase inhibitors work in a similar way, switching from one to another may not produce significantly different results, but a person living with Alzheimers may respond better to one drug versus another.

Before prescribing aducanumab, doctors may require PET scans or an analysis of cerebrospinal fluid to evaluate whether amyloid deposits are present in the brain. This can help doctors make an accurate diagnosis of Alzheimers before prescribing the medication. Once a person is on aducanumab, their doctor or specialist may require routine MRIs to monitor for side effects such as brain swelling or bleeding in the brain.

The Apoe Gene Can Modify Your Risk Of Alzheimers

Many people have read or heard about variations in the APOE gene as a risk factor for Alzheimers. Interestingly, in their inquiry into why this woman with a mutation for early-onset Alzheimers had not yet developed dementia, the researchers found that she had an additional mutation in her APOE gene.

APOE has been linked to ordinary, late-onset Alzheimers disease and comes in three common forms. Most people, about 70% to 75%, have APOE3. About 15% to 20% of people have an APOE4 gene, and about 5% to 10% of people have an APOE2 gene.

  • If you have one APOE4 gene, your risk of developing Alzheimers disease is three to four times more likely than if you only have APOE3 genes.
  • If you have one APOE2 gene, your risk of developing Alzheimers disease is somewhat less than if you only have APOE3 genes.

This womans mutation of her APOE gene is an unusual variant called APOE3Christchurch , named after the New Zealand city where it was first discovered. Even more unusual is the fact that she had two versions of this mutation, meaning that both her father and her mother gave it to her. The researchers wondered if this APOE3ch mutation could be the cause of her resistance to Alzheimers disease.

S To Reverse Dementia And Memory Loss As You Age

RECENTLY, I SPOKE on a panel for PBS TV at the American Association of Retired Persons convention in Boston. The topic was dementia.

There was a woman with mild cognitive impairment on the panel. Her condition is sort of like pre-Alzheimers disease. Everyone on the panel including the Harvard neurologist agreed that memory loss is NOT a normal part of aging. The sad part was that the panel didnt have much to offer people in the way of prevention. Their only solution was just a very bad and pretty ineffective selection of drugs with lots of side effects.

But there is another way to think about brain aging. The brain responds to all the same insults as the rest of the body stress, poor diet, toxins, lack of exercise or sleep, nutritional deficiencies, and more. All we have to do is give the brain a tune-up and we can see miracles. In todays blog I will give you nine tips that will allow you to do that. But first, lets look a little more closely at the magnitude of this problem.

Dementia on the Rise

Dementia is a big problem and growing every day. Ten percent of 65-year olds, 25 percent of 75-year olds, and 50 percent of 85-year olds will get Alzheimers disease at a cost of $60 billion a year to society. Worse, the number of people with Alzheimers is predicted to triple in the next few decades. It is now the seventh leading cause of death.

We once thought that heart disease and artery-clogging plaques couldnt be reversed , I believe dementia can be reversed

Antidepressants And Antianxiety Drugs

Tinnitus treatment often involves a combination of approaches. Your doctor may recommend medication as part of your treatment. These drugs may help make your tinnitus symptoms less annoying, thereby improving your quality of life. Antianxiety drugs are also an effective treatment for insomnia.

A study published in found that an antianxiety drug called alprazolam provides some relief for tinnitus sufferers.

According to the American Tinnitus Association, antidepressants commonly used to treat tinnitus include:

  • clomipramine

Q How Important Is It To Get Rid Of All The Misshapen Tau Thats Floating Around In The Brain To Keep It From Spreading Is There A Threshold Level That The Body Can Keep Under Control

MD: We would guess that there is probably a lower threshold of tau, below which the brain can manage just fine.

KF: Because tau is a normal protein that is quite abundant in the brain, it is not a realistic goal to try to completely remove all misshapen tau. Even if we remove all of the misshapen tau, there is likely more being formed every day. Our goal is to try to reduce the amount of misshapen tau so that we can slow the progression of the disease. Right now, the best treatments we have for AD reduce the loss of cognition for up to six months. Treatment that delays the progression of disease for even a couple of years would be a welcome respite for those who are affected.

What Are The Symptoms Of Alzheimers Disease

Symptoms of Alzheimers disease vary from person to person and worsen over time. Symptoms of the disease include:

  • Memory loss. This is usually one of the first symptoms of Alzheimers disease.
  • Putting objects in odd places
  • Confusion about events, time and place
  • Repeating questions

Q: What Makes You So Optimistic That We Will Find A Treatment That Slows Or Stops The Disease

We now, I believe, have evidence to help us understand why the first hypothesis was wrong. Scientifically, we have very good justification to argue why our new hypotheses are correct.

Were now seeing that companies are getting back into drug development because these new pathways are so compelling.

In the coming years, our biggest focus at the Alzheimers Disease Research Center at Columbia will be accelerating drug discovery. One of the most important goals is to develop new biomarkersfor the new Alzheimers pathways. These biomarkers are crucial for developing the new generation of therapeutic agents. These biomarkers will be useful for enrolling patients into new anticipated clinical trials, following the logic of precision medicine. Also, just as biomarkers of amyloid were important for testing assumptions about the primacy of amyloid in the disease, these biomarkers are important for testingor potentially refutingthe new pathways.

Were also testing gene therapies and other ways to restore endosomal trafficking to see if that prevents neurodegeneration in animal models.

In science, though, you never can be sure. The only way well know were right is by developing drugs and testing the hypothesis in clinical trials in patients, like we did with the amyloid hypothesis.

Give A Person A Treatment Like An Adult

Dementia and Power of Attorney: Medical and Financial Power of Attorney for Dementia

You just have to be respectful while talking to the person. Just give them independence as much as possible. Let them make the decision as much as cable of making. Actually, depending the intensity of the dementia may be the suffering person cant able to make the decision, but make sure to give them opportunity as often as you can. Even in a small choice like, which shirt do you want to wear today? Blue one or the yellow one? Which can improve the quality of life?

Where We Are Now

In brief, these Harvard researchers have a viable hypothesis to explain why this woman has been highly resistant to developing Alzheimers disease dementia. Moreover, their work suggests a possible path to a treatment that could be beneficial for all forms of Alzheimers disease.

We are still years away from a human treatment. The next step will be to try to treat laboratory models of Alzheimers disease in rodents, and then clinical trials in people with the disease after that. But in my view, this paper has provided the scientific community with a clue that may lead us to an eventual cure for Alzheimers disease.
