Oral Bacteria May Be Responsible For Alzheimers Disease
Alzheimers disease is the leading cause of dementia. It progressively worsens multiple aspects of health over time, from short-term memory loss to behavioral changes to loss of bodily functions. The actual cause of Alzheimers is currently unknown. One widely-accepted hypothesis proposes that Alzheimers is caused by the accumulation of misfolded proteins in the brain. Unfortunately, many drugs targeting misfolded proteins perform poorly in clinical trials, hinting that this hypothesis might be wrong. Misfolded proteins might be another side effect, not the cause.
Researchers recently published a new line of evidence supporting a hypothesis that Alzheimers might be a result of an infection by oral bacteria P. gingivalis. The bacteria produces toxins called gingipains that are found to accumulate in the brain of Alzheimers patients. The gingipains degrade human proteins, giving rise to the infamous misfolded proteins. The researchers also developed chemical compounds that could neutralize gingipains. Mice injected with gingipains developed degenerate brain cells, while mice that were pretreated with neutralizing compounds beforehand maintained healthy brain cells.

Scary Shampoo Ingredient #: Propylene Glycol
Next up on the hit list of ingredients to be on the lookout for is one of the most popular toxic ingredients, Propylene Glycol.
Believe it or not, this toxin is used to create of all things anti-freeze, which could obviously kill you if you were to drink it.
Sadly, its also being used in many health and beauty care products as well.
Youll find it in hand sanitizers, moisturizers, conditioners, shampoos, and even baby products.
Youll also find it in a large number of processed foods, which is yet another reason to avoid processed foods altogether.
Electronic cigarettes also contain this ingredient as it gives them that smooth taste that most people like and you may even find it in your medicine cabinet as some pharmaceutical companies are using it to help with the absorption of the active ingredients in those medicines.
Obviously the dose you are getting from these products is much lower than youd ever get in anti-freeze, but make no mistake about it this is a chemical and can be absorbed through the skin. When doses of it get high enough, it can be linked to liver and kidney damage.
When we look at the Environmental Working Groups4 assessment of this particular compound, it earns a grade of 3, which means its right between the low to moderate hazard range. The biggest concerns related to propylene glycol are allergies and immuno-toxicity. It can cause irritation of the skin, eyes, or lungs.

Maintain Regular Veterinary Checkups:
Older cats need regular care to continue to age well. Veterinary medicine is advancing rapidly in the field of geriatric medicine, and you may be surprised at how well your vet can help your pet.
There is no doubt: cats with dementia represent special needs cats. We know, however, that there is great reward in caring for the least of these, even if it is just a cat.
While your furry angel may require you to make a couple of accommodations, there is no doubt the reward of helping a cat live well into advanced age is great. Dont forget to enlist the aid of a veterinary ally you trust: this person will have the knowledge you need to make the best decisions for your cat.

Environmental Group Files Lawsuit
In response to the laboratory results, the CEH filed a lawsuit on Tuesday against four companiesWalgreens, Lake Consumer Products, Ultimark Products, and Todd Christopher International.
Our demand is that companies reformulate their products, without cocamide DEA, says Margulis. There are many similar shampoos and soaps on the market made without the chemical, so it is obviously possible to make the products safer.
The CEH also sent legal letters advising more than 100 other companies producing or selling products containing the chemical that their products violate Proposition 65.
In the lawsuit, which was filed in California Superior Court in Alameda County, the CEH accuses the companies of knowingly and intentionally exposing individuals to cocamide DEA without first giving clear and reasonable warnings to such individuals regarding the carcinogenicity of cocamide DEA.
The lawsuit asks the court to fine the companies $2,500 a day for each violation and prevent them from selling products containing cocamide DEA in California without a clear warning label.
The CEH hopes these short-term actions, along with their continuing efforts, will have an even wider effect.
Under the law, companies can simply label, says Margulis, but weve had hundreds of Prop 65 cases over 17 years of doing this work, and in over 95 percent of these cases, we have won legally binding agreements that require companies to reformulate their products. We expect the same in these cases.

Scary Shampoo Ingredient #: Formaldehyde
If it sounds like a scary name its because it is
Formaldehyde is a colorless, flammable gas that is used in resins when manufacturing composite wood, building materials, household glues, paints, lacquers, and finishes.
If youve ever smelled this poisonous gas, you would instantly cringe. Its not something youd ever dream of putting in your body, but you very well may be without even realizing it.
Its used as a preservative in some medicines, cosmetics, as well as in dishwashing liquids, and yes, its also found frequently in many shampoos.
According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, when the body is exposed to formaldehyde, it can lead to irritation of the skin, eyes, nose, and throat.
If exposure levels are high enough for a prolonged period of time, this could be linked to some types of cancers.
To be fair, everyone is exposed to some degree of formaldehyde in day to day life as its found in the air we breath every day, but the naturally occurring levels are usually low enough not to warrant a threat to your health.
When we are applying it right to our skin however, the game changes.
It doesnt break down as quickly and instead, is absorbed directly into the body which can be significantly more harmful than the amounts we breathe in through the air.
Eczema and changes in lung function have been observed, as well as gastrointestinal ulcers, liver and kidney damage when orally exposed to excessive amounts of this toxin.

Shampoo Brands To Avoid Today
How do you know if the shampoo you are using is right for you? I used to have to buy a shampoo first before deciding if it was right for me. Now, just a glance at shampoo ingredients is enough for me to tell how the product will work and whether it is safe in the first place. The thing is, shampoo ingredients penetrate into our blood system, and we cannot know for certain how they act inside our bodies. Some ingredients in shampoo are associated with endocrine disruption and cancer. Other shampoo ingredients to avoid may cause immediate effects such as skin irritation, allergic reactions, and even hair loss. So, lets talk about my opinions as to shampoo brands to avoid, and why I think we should avoid them. Also, read on to see the non-toxic shampoo options to replace what are, in my opinion, the harmful shampoo brands.
In this post:
These Shampoo & Conditioner Brands Were Not Our Favorite
These are all products that contain dangerous shampoo chemicals and ingredients that are to be avoided as far as possible, like carcinogens and endocrine disrupters in fragrance and at least two other ingredients hazardous to your health. Things you may find in this list include PEGs, parabens, undisclosed fragrance, nitrosamies, surfactants, harsh preservatives, cancer-causing ingredients, & ingredients that may be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane, etc. We also looked specifically for fragrance-free brands that were marked with a and natural, curly, or coiled friendly brands marked with to help you find them.

These Shampoos Cause Cancer
The Center for Environmental Health released an official list of shampoos that cause cancer.
According to the a study on soaps and shampoos, the products you use to was your hair may be deadly. In fact, 98 of the products on the list have a potential cacinogen called cocamide diethanolamine , according to an article by American Web Media.
This carcinogen was listed in 2012 Prop 65 law in California which requires warning labels on products with carcinogens or reproductive toxicants.
Check your shampoo labels and stay away from products with these ingredients:
- Sodium Lauryl Sulfate/Sodium Laureth Sulfate
- Behentrimonium Chloride
Here is the list of shampoos with cancer-causing ingredients, according to the Center for Environmental Health listed in an article by the American Web Media:
Controversial Alzheimer’s Disease Risk Factors
One of the most publicized and controversial theories concerns aluminum, which became a suspect in Alzheimer’s disease when researchers found traces of this metal in the brains of patients with Alzheimer’s disease. Many studies since then have either not been able to confirm this finding or have had questionable results.
Aluminum does turn up in higher amounts than normal in some autopsy studies of Alzheimer’s patients, but not in all. Further doubt about the importance of aluminum stems from the possibility that the aluminum found in some studies did not all come from the brain tissues being studied. Instead, some could have come from the special substances used in the laboratory to study brain tissue.
Aluminum is a common element in the Earth’s crust and is found in small amounts in numerous household products and in many foods. As a result, there have been fears that aluminum in the diet or absorbed in other ways could be a factor in Alzheimer’s. One study found that people who used antiperspirants and antacids containing aluminum had a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s. Others have also reported an association between aluminum exposure and Alzheimer’s disease.
In some nervous system diseases, a virus is the culprit, lurking in the body for decades before a combination of circumstances stir it to action. For years, researchers have sought a virus or other infectious agent in Alzheimer’s disease.

Consider These Safe Shampoo Options Instead Of Potentially Harmful Shampoo Brands
Which shampoo brands can you use in place of shampoo brands to avoid and enjoy their health benefits? Well, there are several options you can consider.
My favorite shampoo is Pure Haven which definitely has no shampoo ingredients to avoid. In my Pure Haven review, you can learn about this brand and other direct sales companies such as Arbonne and Melaleuca.
Next, Innersense hydrating shampoo should work well, in my opinion, for chemically colored, damaged, and curly hair. Because all Innersense shampoos are concentrated, measure well to avoid wasting the product and stripping the hair of natural oils. And, of course, you can read my Innersense Shampoo Ingredients review, too.
Then, there is Hairprint shampoo which, reportedly, works well with naturally coiled and dry hair. I rate it as one of the safest soap-free shampoos in my Shampoo Rating List. Here is my review of Hairprint The Non-Toxic Shampoo to Know About.
Recently, I have reviewed Evolvh Hair and Body Care, namely, their sulfate-free color-safe shampoo. And you can enjoy a generous discount with them in addition to their inexpensive and well-performing products, too.

CEO and Chairman of Rodale, Inc. and book author
When embracing a healthy lifestyle, there’s one thing we learn over and over: healthy living requires vigilance. This is true of food and exercise, and, especially, the products we buy.
Eat protective nutrients. Many of the harmful chemicals in shampoos and body products have an oxidative effect, which can wreak havoc on cells, tissues, and organs by causing chronic inflammation and free radical damage. Antioxidants combat these effects, particularly vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin A and beta-carotene, alpha lipoic acid, N-acetyl-cysteine, and others. Fresh berries, nuts, cruciferous and colored vegetables, and numerous herbs and spices are also high in antioxidants.
Add botanical supplements. Calendula, honeysuckle, astragalus, and rehmannia root can help protect the skin from irritation and other damage. Calendula and honeysuckle are flowers and usually steeped in hot water to make tea. Astragalus and rehmannia are roots and are often ground into a powder and mixed with water, or put into a capsule or tablet form, along with other herbs. Calendula and honeysuckle are also commonly used topically to soothe irritated and inflamed skin. Using herbs both topically and orally can provide greater benefits.

Popular Shampoos Contain Toxic Chemicals Linked To Nerve Damage
Which products contain this chemical compound MIT? Head and Shoulders, Suave, Clairol and Pantene Hair Conditioner all contain this ingredient. Researchers are concerned that exposure to this chemical by pregnant women could put their fetus at risk for abnormal brain development. In other people, exposure could also be a factor in the development of Alzheimer’s disease and other nervous system disorders.
The chemical causes these effects by preventing communication between neurons. Essentially, it slows the networking of neurons, and since the nervous system and brain function on a system of neural networks, the slowing of this network will suppress and impair the normal function of the brain and nervous system.
These finding were presented December 5th at the American Society for Cell Biology annual meeting.
I have frequently warned readers about the dangers of using brand-name personal care products. The vast majority of these products contain toxic chemical compounds like MIT that contribute to cancer, liver disorders and neurological diseases. In fact, this chemical, MIT, is just one of dozens of such chemicals that are found in personal care products.
In other words, this is a shampoo product purchased by naive consumers, in my opinion. People who really know herbs and natural products can only laugh at a product like this. Want a real shampoo? Buy Olive Oil Shampoo from Heritage Products, available at most natural health stores.
