About Alzheimer Society Of Canada:

Founded in 1978, Alzheimer Society of Canada funds research and provides support services for people living with dementia and Alzheimers disease. Dementia refers to a series of chronic nervous system diseases that impair memory, thought processes, and speech. Alzheimers disease is the most common form of dementia. Alzheimer Society of Canada states that more than 500,000 Canadians are living with dementia and around 25,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. The charitys national branch is based in Toronto and coordinates ten provincial societies across Canada. The provincial charities work together towards the common goal of a world without dementia.

Alzheimer Society of Canada runs two main programs: Research and Services.

Research: This program represented 66% of annual program spending in F2021. The Alzheimer Society Research Program is the charitys main focus. Through this program, ALZH funds research projects seeking treatments and possible cures for dementia. Many researchers also aim to improve the quality of life for those affected by dementia. In F2019, the ASRP funded 20 research projects. This included two projects on causes of dementia, three on new treatments, three on diagnosis, six on improving patient care, three on prevention, and two on therapy methods.

Alzheimer Society of Canada decided not to publish a 2020 Annual Report due to covid-19. The profile and results reporting score therefore reflects data found in ALZH’s 2019 Annual Report.

Why Wait

Malcolm had initially intended to leave the money to Alzheimers Society in his will. I woke up one morning, he said, and thought to myself, why wait until Im dead? so I decided there and then to call Alzheimers Society and offer the money.

This unprecedented donation has made an exceptional difference to so many. His gift is tangibly changing lives, both through immediate services, and by investing in future research. By donating earlier than planned, he is able to witness the transformational impact his money has had to move the cause forward.
