Tragic Wilbury Shortage Continues

As always, Im a day late and a dollar short with this post, but I had to say something on the passing of legendary rocker Tom Petty. Petty was a staple on the classic rock radio I grew up listening to, so he was an important musical figure in my early life. I distinctly remember seeing him play Walls on Saturday Night Live and seeing the video for Mary Janes Last Dance when it premiered in the early 1990s. I saw Petty live once, in the mid-1990s, and remember the show being really good.

But, like most things, I took Tom Petty for granted. The last album I bought and listened to from Tom was THE LAST DJ. My musical tastes shifted in high school away from rock towards blues. I know that everything eventually ends and we are all destined to one day die, but for some reason, I never thought Id have to exist in a post-Tom Petty world. But here we are.

When I think of Tom Petty, Ill always think of the Wilburys, my parents vinyl copy of SOUTHERN ACCENTS, and how he chose to not go after The Strokes for ripping off American Girl with their breakout hit Last Night. If you havent heard Last Night in a while, go back and listen, the guitar riff totally rips off American Girl. A young band like The Strokes could have had their careers ruined by a lawsuit from a powerful rock star, but Petty never saw fit to take the NYC hipsters to task for their blatant plagiarism. Now that Im older, I actually see how generous and kind this act was on Pettys part.

Friendship With Mick Jagger

Richards’s relationship with bandmate Mick Jagger is frequently described as “love/hate” by the media. Richards himself said in a 1998 interview: “I think of our differences as a family squabble. If I shout and scream at him, it’s because no one else has the guts to do it or else they’re paid not to do it. At the same time I’d hope Mick realises that I’m a friend who is just trying to bring him into line and do what needs to be done.” Richards, along with Johnny Depp, tried unsuccessfully to persuade Jagger to appear in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, alongside Depp and Richards.

Richards’s autobiography, Life, was published on 26 October 2010. Eleven days prior to its release, the Associated Press published an article stating that in the book Richards refers to Jagger as “unbearable” and notes that their relationship has been strained “for decades”. His opinion softening by 2015, Richards still called Jagger a “snob” but added, “I still love him dearly… your friends don’t have to be perfect.”

Yoga Keto And Sobriety: How The Stones Keep Rolling

After a lifetime of hell-raising, the Rolling Stones are fit enough to go back on tour. What do they know that we don’t?

Of all the great unsolved mysteries in medicine, it is surely the most puzzling. And yesterday, as they announced the restart of their No Filter tour later this year, it cropped up again: why or more precisely how on Gods green earth are the Rolling Stones still going?

If that sounds crass, here follows an incomplete list of the bands near-death escapes, notwithstanding the fact they have a combined age of 308

For starters, all four have admitted to taking heroin, along with just about every other drug chemistry could bestow, and smoked for decades. Two, Ronnie Wood and Charlie Watts, have survived cancer in Ronnies case, twice. A member of the Hells Angels once tried to assassinate Mick Jagger, only for the would-be killers boat to be swamped in a storm.

Other things on Micks ledger? He was almost thrown from a stallion he leapt on, not knowing how to ride it, and only saved himself by punching the horse in the head. He once crashed his Aston Martin DB6 into the Countess of Carlisles Ford Anglia. And he had heart surgery two years ago to replace an aortic valve.

Charlie reportedly survived a head-on collision himself, when his limousine driver fell asleep. And then theres Keith Richards, the Houdini to their David Blaines. In 1965, Keef was knocked unconscious when he was electrocuted on-stage .

Keith Richards is so old-school that when he does his interviews hell do so from a land line.

The Rolling Stones icon isnt a fan of technology. Years ago he admitted to not owning an iPod when the device was most popular. Hes one of the few people who hasnt downloaded Zoom during the pandemic. And he doesnt even own a cellphone.

Im not at all hooked in any high-tech internets, he says. I dont even have a phone, man. Im talking to you from on a land line. Why would I want a phone? You crazy?

The unbothered 76-year-old rocker has been home for a full year now a first for Richards, he reveals. He, Mick Jagger, Ronnie Wood and Charlie Watts wrapped part of their No Filter Tour in August 2019, and they had plans to hit the road again in May 2020, but things changed following coronavirus outbreak.

The tour came at an uncertain time for the Rolling Stones some thought the group might break up.

Mick wrote the lyrics, he adds. Maybe hes a prophet, huh?

‘no Rest For The Wicked’

The star has been riding out quarantine in his home in Connecticut, reading the Master and Commander series of historical novels, while occasionally writing music, and watching the US Presidential election with the curious detachment of a resident alien.

“Oh man, it’s crazy,” he laughs. “I don’t even want to go into it. I’m hiding.”

To compensate for the lack of new concerts, Richards has overseen the reissue of a classic live album, recorded with his other band, The X-Pensive Winos, in 1988.

It’s a loose, soulful record, that provides a rare chance to experience Richards as the focal point of a band… Not that he was necessarily comfortable with that role.

“It was the first time I’d ever had to be the frontman so I learned an awful lot about Mick ‘s job,” he says. “You’ve got to be on the case all the time.

“With The Stones, I can sort of step forward or hunker down back with Charlie . But I realised that when you’re number one, well, there’s no rest for the wicked.”

The album was recorded at a pivotal time in Richards’ life. He had recently kicked heroin, was estranged from Jagger and was a new father to two daughters, Theodora Dupree and Alexandra Nicole, born in 1985 and 1986 respectively.

On stage, meanwhile, he was enjoying playing smaller venues than the football stadiums that had become the Stones’ stomping grounds.

“I still love playing clubs, just for atmosphere, and the sounds,” he says.

New Health Fears For Keith Richards After Erratic Awards Show Appearance

Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards made an erratic appearance at last night’s Scream Awards, sparking new concerns for his health.

The musician, who takes daily medication to prevent seizures after brain surgery last year, struggled to stay upright and slurred his way through his acceptance speech.

Appearing via satellite, he rambled and slurred through a pre-record video message after he was awarded best cameo performance for his role in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.

He said: “Thank you all fans for voting me in, you know.”

“It’s a first – it’s not my land, usually, to do this sort of stuff, but due to enormous public pressure…

“I’ve got to say thank you very, very much and also to Johnny – who insisted that I play his father.”

Richards added: “We had a great time and it was a wonderful thing.

The star required major surgery after falling from a coconut tree while on holiday in Fiji 18 months ago.

He has since revealed: “The drug I’m on now because of the brain job, Dilantin, means you can’t take cocaine any more, which is fine for me.”

Ronnie Wood admitted recently that Richards now suffers from memory loss, and occasionally stuggles to remember how to play even their biggest hits.

Relapsing After A Decade Of Sobriety

In her book;Hopeful Healing:;Essays on Managing Recovery and Surviving Addiction, Mackenzie Phillips writes about being a young mother while still abusing drugs. According to Phillips, she had locked herself in the bathroom so she could inject herself with heroin when her young son began banging on the door. She experienced “a flash of clarity”;when her memory took her to her own childhood, knocking on the bathroom door looking for her father, only to hear him say, “Not now darling, Daddy’s shooting up.”

That epiphany led her to rehab and a decade of sobriety. However, the combination of her father’s encroaching death and receiving a prescription for painkillers after undergoing surgery presented a setback. Those pills, she wrote, “are to an addict what bacon is to a reluctant vegetarian:;one taste of either and you’re back where you started.” When her doctor cut her off from the pain pills, she got in touch with her old drug dealers, who were happy to supply her with cocaine and heroin. This relapse brought Phillips to what she described as “the darkest time in my life,”;when she “literally lived to shoot up, which is a god-awful way to live.”

Outlaw Country And Success

Nelson moved to Austin, Texas, where the burgeoning hippie music scene rejuvenated the singer. His popularity in Austin soared as he played his own brand of country music marked by country, folk and jazz influences. In March, he performed on the final day of the Dripping Springs Reunion, a three-day country music festival aimed by its producers to be an annual event. Despite the failure to reach the expected attendance, the concept of the festival inspired Nelson to create the Fourth of July Picnic, his own annual event, starting the following year.

Nelson decided to return to the recording business, he signed Neil Reshen as his manager to negotiate with RCA, who got the label to agree to end his contract upon repayment of $14,000. Reshen eventually signed Nelson to Atlantic Records for $25,000 per year, where he became the label’s first country artist. The Family, and by February 1973, he was recording his acclaimed Shotgun Willie at Atlantic Studios in New York City.
