Dempsey played the role of Derek from the shows inception in 2005 until 2015, after starring in 11 seasons of the medical drama. He left the show to focus on his family and his passion for auto-racing. Speaking to People, Dempsey explained leaving Greys Anatomy was simply the end of a chapter.
Meredith’s First Preference Had Been Neurology
For those who don’t remember, Meredith had initially started taking a lot of interest in neurology, not least because of Derek, of course, but also because she was actually very good at it.
Meredith would most likely have gone on to choose neurology as her specialty had she not messed with Derek’s Alzheimer’s trial. The two had a falling out when it was revealed that she had rigged the trial. While Derek did forgive her eventually, he told her that he could not train her anymore, and finally, Meredith moved on to general surgery.
A Popular Theory Leaves Meredith Where Her Mother Ended Up

On the other hand, some fan theories arent nearly as happy. And it has fans chomping at the bit. If you recall, Merediths mother was discovered to have developed early-onset Alzheimers disease and later dies. Greys Anatomy season nine reveals to fans that Meredith tested positive for several genetic markers for Alzheimers. Its supporting a theory that some Redditors are saying could be a really bad and sloppy ending to the show.
The heartbreakingly popular theory is that Meredith is diagnosed with Alzheimers in the end. Rhysieroni says, I think it ends with Mer being diagnosed with Alzheimers, and we see a grown-up version of Zola or one of the other kids finding her journals, which are her voice-overs that she does every episode.
If the ending leaves Meredith where her mother ended up, the finale will break a lot of hearts. Sometimes a simple happy ending can sit better with fans.

It appears Cristina is not pregnant and the baby is just a figment of her imagination. Though it was Jo and Stephanie who found the baby, Cristina takes over from them and names the baby Oscar. When Cristina first became pregnant after a sexual encounter with Burke, she did not seem too attached to her pregnancy.
Meredith Ended Up Sick During Her Boards
Meredith Grey knows how to keep the audience as well as everyone around her in tenterhooks. The surgical interns have to go through a board exam to get them through to the next stage, that of a surgical resident.
In true Grey’s style, the episode with the boards is filled with drama with someone showing up late for the interview, others having sex in the restroom, and Meredith catching some kind of bug that made her quite sick. Meredith caught the stomach bug from her daughter Zozo and ended up retching into a bucket before and during her interview. Of course, given who she was, she passed the exam with flying colors!

Somehealth professionals worry that consumers will “take the results and run,” as put it. Freivogel, a certified genetic counselor and the president of the National Society of Genetic Counselors, added that genetics are just “one piece to the story when it comes to developing a disease.”
Freivogel said speaking with a genetic counselor before getting tested for disease is important. “Direct-to-consumer testing takes away a pre-test conversation,” she said, where counselors can help patients think about questions like: “What do you want to know? What are you going to do with this information? Is it something you’re prepared to know, or is it going to just make you anxious?”
And it isn’t clear what consumers should do with their newly calculated disease risk, especially for conditions like Alzheimer’s for which there isn’t a cure or even a course of action to prevent the disease.
What’s more, having the genes is not the same as having the diseases the genes are associated with. A person may have genes that are associated with Alzheimer’s, for example, but that doesn’t mean he or she will ever get the disease. Conversely, some people develop Alzheimer’s without the identified risk genes.
The Alzheimer’s Association does not recommend routine genetic testing for the disease in the general population because it can’t “productively guide medical treatment.”

Meredith Grey is Chief of Surgery at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital on Greys Anatomy. She isnt an easy character to describe shes a myriad of love, loss, and every other dramatic event a single human can experience. And despite all that shes lost, she continues to find joy in her work as a surgeon, as a teacher, as a mother. And she managed to share that joy through her spirit of discovery and of possibility and of hope, right in the face of darkness.

Meredith Rigs A Clinical Trial
Speaking of illegal AND immoral, Meredith pulls a stunt of her own back in season seven. Working with Derek on an Alzheimer’s trial, the two do a blind testing that would allow some patients to get the real meds, while the others get a placebo. It’s at this same time that Dr. Webber’s wife, Adele, is grappling with rapidly advancing Alzheimer’s, and Meredith is worried Adele might get the placebo instead of the medicine. So worried, in fact, that she tampers with Adele’s dose to make sure she gets the medicine. Alex finds out and narcs on her, but things work out in the end as they tend to do for the doctors on Grey’s.
Meredith would be so fired if she really did this. She might not even be able to step foot in a hospital if she rigged a national trial. She’d be disgraced and run out of the medical community. Forever.

A new fan theory suggests that Meredith Grey has Alzheimer’s disease. With the debilitating disease, symptoms usually develop slowly and worsen over time, becoming severe enough to interfere with everyday tasks. Fans will remember that it’s the disease that led to the death of Ellis Grey , Meredith’s mother, in season 3 and that Meredith tested positive for several genetic markers for Alzheimer’s in season 9.
In fact, Alzheimer’s was first introduced to the show in the pilot episode, when Meredith’s voiceover narration was revealed to be a story she was telling her mother at an assisted living facility.
So what if Meredith’s subsequent voiceovers were stories she tells her three children sometime in the future? Perhaps some of her memories from over the years were altered by dementia, mixing fact with fiction.

In the pilot “A Hard Night’s Day,” the surgical interns at what was then Seattle Grace Teaching Hospital had to slog through a 48-hour shift that tested their stamina and drained them of their motivation, except that it didn’t.
In a heartwarming scene, towards the end of the episode, Meredith is seen resting for a moment with George O’Malley the two seem dejected and wonder why they didn’t opt for some other profession that was less demanding. At this time Meredith tells George that her mother, the famous surgeon Ellis Grey, had tried to talk her out of joining medical school since she didn’t think Meredith would make a good surgeon. Well, Ellis was clearly very wrong since Meredith proved to be quite the genius, after all.

Meredith Is A Ticking Time Bomb
Let’s go back to season nine, when Meredith asks Bailey to test for her susceptibility to Alzheimer’s. Meredith’s results come back positive for more than one of the genetic markers for Alzheimer’s disease, and I’d argue that creator Shonda Rhimes planted this seed then. Meredith is practically doomed to get the disease at some point before the end of the series. It’s the ultimate heartbreak and a poetic full-circle moment for the character as she follows in the footsteps of her brilliant mother. When you keep in mind that this has been hanging over Meredith’s head for about six seasons, you have to realize it gets more and more likely as each one comes and goes.
That’s why it’s important to establish that Meredith has this genetic predisposition to the disease. It means that she’s almost undoubtedly going to get it in her lifetime. But the fact that she already tests positive for some of the genetic markers means it could happen sooner rather than later. That’s how the show establishes that her Alzheimer’s will be early onset and that she’ll likely get it while she’s still young .

Abstract
Alzheimers disease is a progressive, neurodegenerative disease that represents a growing global health crisis. Two major forms of the disease exist: early onset and late onset . Early onset Alzheimers is rare, accounting for less than 5% of disease burden. It is inherited in Mendelian dominant fashion and is caused by mutations in three genes . Late onset Alzheimers is common among individuals over 65 years of age. Heritability of this form of the disease is high , but the etiology is driven by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. A large number of genes have been implicated in the development of late onset Alzheimers. Examples that have been confirmed by multiple studies include ABCA7, APOE, BIN1, CD2AP, CD33, CLU, CR1, EPHA1, MS4A4A/MS4A4E/MS4A6E, PICALM, and SORL1. Despite tremendous progress over the past three decades, roughly half of the heritability for the late onset of the disease remains unidentified. Finding the remaining genetic factors that contribute to the development of late onset Alzheimers disease holds the potential to provide novel targets for treatment and prevention, leading to the development of effective strategies to combat this devastating disease.

Diane’s Cancer And Death
Her mother came to the hospital to visit Maggie and see Jackson to get rid of a rash, which turned out to be inflammatory breast cancer. Diane and Jackson were gonna tell Maggie before Diane left, but they got into a fight and never got to talk about the cancer. A few months later, when Diane returned to have surgery, Maggie kept thinking that her mother was getting breast implants and failed to understand why continuously trying to talk her mother out of it. When Diane later told Maggie the truth about her breast cancer, Maggie immediately started looking at her charts. Over the next few months, Maggie helped her mom through everything and stated her opinion about what she should do, which her mother followed. After Maggie butted heads with Meredith, Diane fired her from her mother’s case. Maggie found a clinical trial and signed her mom up for it, although the trial did more harm than good.
After she stated that she wasn’t ready for her mom to go, Meredith told her to listen to her mom and record her voice in her mind. The next day, Maggie was talking to her mom and painting her nails. Diane gave her advice including to have some fun in her life and to be a little lazy or slutty and to make a mistake. When Maggie went to open a window, she came back to find that her mom had died. Later on, she was seen hugging her mom’s lifeless body with Meredith and Amelia in the room. Her dad came in and she hugged him.
